Calypso Jr. Lt.

Is it true that spiderco discontinued the fine little calypso Jr.Lw I think it was one of Spiderco's best knives and sharpest with that vg-10 steel.

I hope - not, because it is catalogued for 2001, page 15 of SPYDERCO Dealer Catalog.

It is sweet little folder, I would be disconsolate...

BEST sub 3" folder out there. Period...
I don't think it's discontinued...
VG10 kicks serious bum-bum...
Me likes it lots n' lots...

Thats what a large knife retailer told me this morning! That it had been discontinued that they could not get it anymore. Just got a e-mail back from Spyderco it is true!To make room for other models It's a sad day going to miss it.

Hi William8. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

The micarta version with the AUS8 blade steel was retired last year. We still make the FRN version (VG10) and the Stainless handle version (AUS8).

This is not good news. Makes me upset alot!!!
Those knives were by far the sharpest and the best value knife that I have ever used.
This is upsetting news. Wished that I would have known I would have stocked up on them.

So, the lighweight (FRN) and the stainless handled versions are NOT being discontinued?

I own and like the micarta version--the ONLY one that's been discontinued, and it's been a few months already BTW--and it's a great knife. But the Ltwt version might just be better. Way better steel, smoother opening (the ones I've held), and a pretty cool design for a Zytel handle. I was going to buy a spare micarta (you can still find them around), but I wouldn't feel bad if I "had" to go with the Ltwt. VG-10 is a fine thing.

I was just making sure that I didnt misunderstand which was being discontinuted. I have both lightweight one and a micarta one, and I prefer the lightweight. IMO, the "lines" of the lightweight version (the way the handle shape matches the blade hump and choil, the way it fits my hand, etc) are nicer than the micarta one, not to mention the wonderful VG-10 steel. It's a great knife. I was gonna buy another one or two if they were being discontinued, just so I could stockpile them.

I keep telling myself that maybe someday Spyderco will make a micarta handled Calypso Jr, with a VG-10 blade. A small sprint run even, with maybe a different color micarta handle from the originals. I'm not holding my breath while I tell myself this btw. In the meantime I will just have to make due with the almite Worker with a plain edge.

Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

I'm glad the VG-10 version isn't being discontinued. I just bought one--my first Spyderco. I've been a knife freak for a long time, but have generally preferred more traditional styles. But I kept reading about how great the Spydies were and decided that I just had to take the plunge, and the Calypso Jr. Lt. was the one I decided on. It is absolutely the sharpest folder out of the box I ever saw. I actually whittled shavings off a hair withe it. Unbelievable.

I also keep telling me that spyderco will do micarta Dragonfly with vg-10 blade.

When I really dream I dream of titanium handled calupso family with vg-10 or better steel (that steel has to be able take mirror finish).

I like Paul's idea about the Calypso JR micarta handle w/ VG-10.
