Calypso Jr. Question

I'm thinking of getting a Calypso Jr. lightweight (w/the black fiberglass reinforced grips). I've already got the Calypso Jr. stainless.

I've got a smallish collection of Spydercos (only five), and don't really want to get any repeats (multiple copies of the same or similar designs). However, I'm interested in the CJr. lightweight because it seems like a very different knife from the stainess version. The blade's flat ground vs. hollow, and the steel is VG-10, which I've heard lots of good things about.

Is there anyone out there who has a recommendation on this? Anyone who has both?

Thanks for the advice.

Jack

I have a Calypso Jr. Lightweight in my collection that I would like to sell. It is like new in box (never carried or cut anything with it). It has a serrated blade. I like it alot but I will never carry it and I am thinking of thinning my collection down some. Email me and we will talk about it.

RacerX, I'm also trying to collect different designs as you do. Only basic design that I own more than one (not counting Civilians and enduras that are my steak knives) is calypso (I have them all with plain edge). All calypsos share general appearance but have denitely own character.
SS Calypso jr and Calypso jr ltwt are wery much different. 'Only' thing that they share is the comfort of handling and pointy blade. Solely the weight different sets them apart. SS weights about twice as much as ltwt. After handling SS ltwt feels like feather.
SS is more classy looking IMO although ltwt has quite pleasing appearance too(it is one of best looking light weigth folders in market).
What really makes them different is ltwt's flat ground VG-10 blade. That flat groud blade is superior to SS's calypsos hollow ground blade. SS's blade can be made as sharp if it comes to shaving but in actual cutting performance ltwt wins clearly.
It was good that you didn't have micarta jr as difference between it and ltwt is smaller in use. One is by far better looking and one has a lot better edgeholding. They share THE vorpal cutting performance.

If you buy ltwt you won't be sorry.

Michael,

Thanks for the offer; however, I'll have to decline. I'm really a plain edge fan. Not that serrations don't have a purpose (and I've got a serrated Spyderco Standard), but I prefer to buy just plain edges.

Tommi,

Thanks for all of the info! You helped me to make the decision to get a Calypso Jr. lightweight. I'm not completely sure of what you were saying about the Micarta version. Was it that the difference would have been lesser between the Calypso Jr in Micarta vs. the Calypso Jr in SS? If so, I agree. I've never had a Micarta handled knife, and would like to get one someday. However, for now I think I'll look for a Calypso Jr Lightweight w/plain edge.

Thanks again for your help.

Also, what did you mean when you said of the micarta and lightweight "They share THE vorpal cutting performance"?

Jack

Difference between micarta and ltwt is lesser in daily use than between SS and ltwt. In cutting performance - not in edgeholding as you have to sharpen aus-8 blade more often.

Vorpal cutting - somethig that REALLY cuts. Blade geometry is excellent(same in both knives) and both are of very fine grain steel -> both can take razor shap edge.

I picked up a Calypso jr. ltwt. at the SFO a few weeks ago. It has replaced my delica as my daily carry utility blade. I used it to cut some heavy leather strapping and it zipped through it like it wasn't there. The flat ground VG-10 is great.
You can't go wrong with this one!

RacerX,
You can't go wrong with Lightweight Calypso Jr. It is excellent for precise cutting, very comfortable to handle and to carry. More, it is fully ambidextrous because you can place pocket clip at each side of the handle. Thin VG-10 blade holds the edge very well when slicing.
In my honest opinion this is one of the best pocket-sized lightweight knives.
