Calypso Jr. SE, as good as the PE???

Hello all! I'm considering buying a Calypso Jr. in SE, mostly because it's cheap, but that's not why I'm posting this. My question is, that I've heard a LOT of good things about the Calypso Jr. with the PE, however I rarely hear anything about the SE. Is this comparable to the Delica in SE, and is the VG-10 any different in SE than in PE? I'm planning on ordering a shipment of knives soon, so any responses that you could give me would be extremely appreciated. Thanks!

Sincerely,
Anthony

I think the SE is every bit as nice as the PE. Same VG-10 steel, only serrated. I think Spyderco makes the best serrated edges - you can't go wrong with this knife for the price. Add this one to your order!

Jabajet, Thanks for the response! I was only a little leary of the SE Calypso because I never heard anything about it here. Of course, my first spyderco (my first real knife) was a SE Delica, so I knew that the serrations mean business on a Spyderco, but I also know that sometimes a knife which seems promising turns out to be a real dud in execution. I'm glad to hear that this isn't one of those to worry about! Thanks, again

Sincerely,
Anthony

The Calypso Jr is one of my favorite Spydies and the only one I have in both PE and SE. I think the SE is great.

I have the Calypso Jr. SE and love it. I also have the Navigator PE. I got them both from SMKW at a great price. I purchased both of these as sheeple friendly work knives for the office. The Navigator is friendlier looking but the back of the blade scrapes the hand when going into the pocket. The Calypso Jr. does not do this so I end up carrying this one. The spydie serrations and flat ground blade make this a very sharp utility edc. If you can still get it for $24.99 don't pass it up. It is good to have at least one serrated edge around. Another good quality is its lightweight and the only reason I would get a Delica instead is that if you do not like to tip down carry witch I am finding out is safer in the pocket but not as quick.

I was able to bag one of these from SMKW when they still had them. Great knife for EDC. I wish I'd ordered more than one. I carry and use it daily. Got an Emerson Commander about the same time my Calypso came in the mail. The Emerson sits in a drawer while the Spydie earns it's keep. Cheers.

I have 3 Calypso,s 2 SE jrs 1 PE lg Micarta and i can vouch for the SE VG-10 being even more agressive than the others.
I've yet to touch either of my SE on any kind of sharpening device other than an occasional flat rub on the bakside to remove the wire edge that forms.
Pal if you can find em cheap you better buy a pile of them. Ron

I think the Calypso Jr. doesn't work well at all in SE. I bought four of them from SMKW, one for myself and three to give as gifts. After using it for a while, I returned the other three and bought Navigators instead.

The problem is that the blade shape and maybe the grind or thinness results in the serrations frequently catching or binding on the object being cut. This is not the case with, say, the Delica SE; it's specific to the Calypso Jr. SE. Other Bladeforumers had warned me of this tendency, but I could not resist the price. I love the Calypso Jr. PE, by the way.

Just my $0.02.

I have been really impressed with the performance of my SE Calypso Jr. I normally don’t like serrations on a smallish EDC, but they have worked well on the Calypso Jr. The Calypso Jr. is hard to pass up at $25, I would get one before they are gone.

The Calypso jr. is one of the best knives ever made, IMO. Both SE and PE work great, though for different purposes.
Choose a PE for some more delicate cutting, or a SE for raw cutting chores.
Also note that PE is easier to sharpen but the SE lasts longer.

I agree with dialex. Both the PE and the SE Calypso Jr's. are superb. I carry one of each at all times. Sometimes a PE comes up on eBay. They are a little more pricey, but worth every cent.

These knives have an appeal that belies their size and price. Sometimes a thing just turns out to be more than it was ever planned or expected to be. It trancends mere design, and performs beyond any reasonably expected level. The Calypso Jr's. fall into that category.
