Calypso Jr. , the knifeknut's knife

I just got my fully serrated Calypso Jr. Bought it from J and L Self-Defense Products.

Thought it was a good deal for $38 bucks (plus I got 10% off from my J&L newsletter email), and it probably is...

Don't other black micarta Calypso Jrs. have reversible clips? Mine is fixed for right hand use only. It also has the J&L logo on the blade (which I don't mind, since I've always had good dealings with the company and recommend it highly) and came in a plain little box. I also knew I was getting my first tip down Spydie, but I figured the clip would be reversible for left pocket carry. Oh well!

The micarta feels slick, but actually seems to give a good enough hold. The blade is about a quarter inch shorter than my Delicas, while the handle is almost exactly the same length. It's a solid, classy knife, with the "gold bug" on the clip and of course, AUS-8 steel for the blade. I like the bevelled spine. It's a "cut above" my FRNs.

But it seems I've become a "tip up kinda guy." I don't think this one will be carried often, especially if I want to keep it nice.

Will I even keep it? Probably. It might even make a nice gift for someone special later on. I'd give it to my Dad for father's day, but he's not into knives and might just lose it, or stick it in a drawer.

I just got a real nice micarta Spydie and I don't know how to feel about it. Weird!

Any comments?

Karl

Day Two: Calypso Junior.

Well, it's growing on me. Took it to the bagel table this morning and my, oh my, did it cut a banana nut! Best darn bagel cutter I've tried. Of course, the bagels aren't all of a standardized consistency, but I swear this knife took considerably less force to slice through than anything yet!

No, I haven't tried my plain edge blue Delica yet. Maybe next week I'll stage a "slice off" at the Bagel Corral.

Anyways, Calypso Junior has definitely joined my Spydie family!

Karl, you get points for showing the proper appreciation of the Calypso Jr., but you get marked down considerably for believing that "banana nut" is an acceptable flavor for a bagel. Acceptable flavors are: plain, salt, garlic, onion, poppy, sesame, and everything. Don't even get me started on cinnamon raisin.

Joe, for my S-D class final meeting, I took them Panera bagels, mostly in flavor

CINNAMON CRUNCH!!

And I had a nice selection of KNIVES on the table for the students' bagel slicing pleasure!

I think everyone had a good time watching the final attack video and yakking and eating bagels. Just ask Tom Marker.

Cinnamononinin crunchily yers,

Karl

I've had out macarta model a week now; it's already my favorite Spyderco in our ever growing collection! RKBA!

My plain micarta Jr. is one of my favorites. It's small enough to forget about while in my pocket and doesn't cause the raised eyebrows that my serrated Military does. My clip is right hand only.

Safety Guy, it's fixed, tip up. I prefer tip down. The FRN model has the reversable clip, and better steel. Got to have one!

I'm not usually an FRN kind of guy but I make an exception for this knife. The Lightweight Calypso Jr. is one of my all around favorite knives for general utility carry. I also get them and give them as Christmas presents. Probably be some more going out this year. Great, great deal and VG-10 steel!

I just have to chime in and say that I too love the Calypso Jr. lightweight. I had both a micarta handled and FRN calypso Jr. and I traded the micarta one because I just didn't like it as well as the FRN one. It seems to me that the FRN one just fits my hand better, and VG-10 steel is simply awesome. I thought I hated FRN until I bought this knife. Now I really like it...

As far as bagels go, it's hard to beat an "everything" bagel with cream cheese... MMMmmmmm...
