Calypso Jr. -- vertical blade play?

I recently acquired a gray FRN Calypso Jr. and would be interested to know if anyone else has found theirs to have noticeable vertical blade play.

Is it just that the design of the knife, with both index finger and thumb resting in cut-outs that span the junction between blade and handle, makes a small amount of blade play more perceptible? Even during relatively light cutting, the feeling of the blade "squirming" in my fingers is a bit unnerving.

No blade play in mine. None. Send it in, it's an excellent knife.

Colorado Dave, I have had the experience you speak of. My first Spyderco purchase was a SS Dragonfly. My second a Military. I love them both still. With my interest in Spyderco knives growing, I bought a Calypso Jr. when they first came out. I noticed the vertical play when I pressed into material I wanted to cut and sent it in to Spyderco. It was replaced by another Calypso Jr. with the same vertical blade play so I gave up on FRN handled Spyderco knives. That's probably an over reaction given the small number of FRN Spydercos I've sampled. Just the same, I'll stick with the higher end Spyderco products.

I remember reading that lockbacks are susceptible to minute amounts of blade play.

personally though, I've never encountered any bladeplay in any of my FRN spydies - Delica, Endura, Calypso.

I've found with my user CJ from the recent run that cutting thick cardboard, particularly with a less-than-screaming-sharp edge, will induce significant vertical blade play. It was disconcerting the first few times it happened, but I grew accustomed to it. Keeping the blade sharp reduces the tendency somewhat. I've never had any blade play under any other circumstances with this knife, just long cuts on thick cardboard.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Unfortunately, this knife is a warranty replacement for one I returned already, so I think I'm just going to chalk it up to bad karma or something.

I've seen this with lockbacks before, though never to this degree with a brand new knife. I have no reason to believe that this seriously compromises the safety of the knife for use in normal cutting chores.
