Calypso Jr. ZDP189 - blade centered?

A while ago, I received a black FRN Calypso Jr. in trade. Nice knife; I could see why it has the following that it does, and why it was reincarnated in grey and now burgundy with the ZDP189.

But the blade on the one I had was not centered - it was off to the side. I remember seeing other posts around here indicating that was not uncommon, and some even suggested tightening/loosening the clip screws to help center the blade. My attempts to do so did nothing, and the off-center blade eventually bothered me to the point that I traded it.

Do the newer versions of the Calypso Jr. (i.e. grey VG-10, and/or burgundy ZDP189) still have this problem? Anyone? Anyone?

My new ZDP189 Calypso Jr. is perfectly centered, although the grind at the tip of the blade is slightly off-center.

Mine was centered, not that it makes much functional difference. Since you seem concerned with a somewhat cosmetic issue you should consider the unusual appearance of the laminated blade. The exposed blade core is about 1/4-inch wide. It shows up every little variation of the blade grind. The appearance of the core and the blade grind is likely to be a bigger issue than the blade centering ever was.

My blade is centered but as Jeff pointed out: Expect the lamination line to be wavy, and not only by fractions of millimeters. For me that gives the knife some individuality, but if you are bothered by such things....stay away....leaves more for the rest of us... :p

I've got two gray Calypso and the new burgundy one. They all have perfectly centred blades. No problems at all.

IIRC, this problem occured in connection to the first batch (problems with HT). There should have been a tag enclosed informing about this matter.

No, the latter Jr's do not, in general, display this flaw.

For the price point that the Calypso Jr. is offered at, I wouldn't get to bent out of shape about the blade not being perfectly centered. It's a good knife at a good price.

A question out of curiosity. Is it better to have an off center blade and great steel or a centered blade with mediocre steel? Sal could use cheaper steel and center the blades with the money saved.

My ZDP is centered but as someone else said the grind at the tip is very very slightly off-center, but for a knife that cuts this well for only 65$ its perfect. (although I happen to not be a fan of the burgundy, would have prefered the blue)

I picked mine up today and it came so "wickedly sharp out of the box" I never even noticed the centering of the blade. I just checked and it's fine. I just can't believe how darn sharp it is.

Well, hmm, my Calypso Jr (Grey/VG-10) is perfectly centered, and I have no interest in the new burg/supersteel version, so I couldn't comment about that.

Well, I am not sure how much differecne it makes. My Grey is off center and my new ZDP is on center.
