The Calypso Jr is a knife that meets my needs. Got it in Friday and have had a chance to get to know a little better. I just love the FLAT ground VG10 blade, it cuts everything so well. I have never touched a JR before, but I wish I had earlier. I would have not let it go.
Back to the blade, how thick is it? Looks thinner than the Native?
Also, what other blades are in VG10, good stuff!

Best answer to that is that it's a tricky question, in one respect (at the tang end) the blade thickness is identical, but the "working" portion of the Calypso Jr blade tapers much more rapidly than that of the Native because of the flat grind. This, coupled with slightly less blade length, and marginally less blade height, makes the Calypso Jr feel far lighter than the Native. And yes, I agree, it is a great knife!

For some idiotic reason, I sold my Black FRN Calypso, Jr. a couple of years ago.

Fortunately, I got one of the Gray ones from New Graham today. Fantastic. I'll not being getting rid of this one.

This was the most recent Calypso Jr thread other than the huge one...

Since everyone is hyping the Calypso Jr, I figured I should take a look at it. It definitely looks nice and seems like it would be a good cutter. My question is, is it any different from the old one? A search on google for shops selling it shows quite a few but there seem to be some variations. I'm guessing that the black clip/gold bug is the old one and brushed clip/black bug is the new one. Other than that and the gray versus black handles, is there any difference? Why is this knife so ballyhooed? If it was produced in the past and such a great knife, why was it discontinued?

edit: or is this just a special run with gray handles and people want it because its collectible?

Obviously, I'm lacking some info here...what is it?

Minjin,
You are correct the black and gray calypso Jr. are the same shape, size, steel, handles except the colors and clip. I don't believe that the original Black ones were great sellers (at first) and were discontinued. With the Black PE's pretty much selling out, in time the LOUD voices of this forum, and I'm sure others, prompted sal to make the run of grays. I'm sure depending on the sales performance these may be the only ones, or hopefully many more to come.

Minjin,

I didn't get into Spydercos until the first runs had been discontinued and all of the non-serrated models had sold out. After experiencing the Spyderlicious cutting ability of the Delica and the secure, integral choil of the Native, I asked folks here if they could be combined. I was told that the Calypso, Jr. had those features and I had missed the boat because no more were being made.

With a full flat grind instead of a sabre flat grind, the Calypso, Jr. appeared like it might even have been an even better cutter than the Delica (I'm still not sure), so, like many others who missed the boat the first time or who had a feeling of nostalgia, I cried and whined for Sal to take my money in exchange for a Calypso, Jr. Instead, he took my wife's money and I got a great Christmas present.

So the only real difference between the new Calypso, Jr. and its predecessors is availability.

Minjin,
One last thing. You asked why it was discontinued: Keep in mind that collectors, make up a very very small percentage of those buying a knife. We who have knowledge on these knives, recognize the genious in the design of the Calypso Jr. The average knife buying public though has no clue what full flat grind or ergonomics or VG-10 have to do with a knife. They just see one for cheaper and buy it, and never think they've shorted themselves.

Sal went out on a limb here to reproduce a knife of the collectors for us, knowing the public wouldn't see the importance. Kuddo's to him! :)
