Ok, I picked up a Camco workhorse in Ebay for less than $10. The ad said that it was made by Camillus as an off brand. I didn't really buy that line, but it looked like a decent enough knife for $10+cheap shipping. It arrived today, and danged if it doesn't look like a clone of my old USA made Schrade trapper. It is stamped PRC on the blade to try to hide that it was made in China. But at this point, aside from having a jigged bone handle, I'd be hard pressed to tell them apart. Has anybody else had any experience with Camco knives?

was the budget line for camillus. had been for alot of years (on and off) i dont know for sure when they started making them abroad, they used to be made stateside though. I think PRC was their way of marking it china made, deliberately misleading, not really but a little sneaky i suppose:cool:
If ya have a problem with the chinese manufacturer send it my way i'll give it a go:D at that price point if its finished nicely i wouldnt care its a user

I have bought a couple Camco marked pocketknives off of ebay. Good fit and finish, stainless blade that is fairly sharp out of the box, not a razor by any means, I have to say about as good a value as the standard Rough Rider knives that get good reviews on this forum.

Camillus brought back their old "Camco" name, only this time for overseas lines, at least a year or more before they went under and it appears that whoever bought the name has continued it.

I got this one at a Gander Mountain when they first came out, way before Camillus went under. It's for their "Buckmaster" series. It's a clone of a Schrade LB7, even uses the model number BMLB7.

P.R.C. stamp as Ivankerly mentions.

Quality is high

Camco was a value line trademark of Camillus. At least in the latter years theu were imported, not sure about where they were made in the earlier years.

I have one of their AO's as does a family member. They are working quality knives- not much more to say.

P.R.C. = Peoples Republic of China - to make sure no one mistakenly thought they were made in Taiwan.

Nope. I live in California. Trust me, we know the difference between the PRC and the ROC. One is a republc, the other is a totalitarian state. Just like California...

Monkeyboy, for good or for bad we keep politics and political opinion off this forum. We do, however, have other forums on the site where such discussion is appropriate.

Thanks.

I have a Camco knife, but it is an old one. I picked it up at an antique shop about a year ago for $10. It says CAMCO and USA below that. It is carbon steel and sharpens up real nice. The blades are pretty worn but have a lot of good use still in them. The handle is great -- that multi-colored celluloid from the 1950's. If I can figure out how to post a picture of it I'll do so.

As promised, some pictures of my old CAMCO:

Excellent $10 knives with very well done black and copper foil Mictara handles
A little better than Rough Rider.

The old Camco's from Camillus are pretty cool. Although the knife isn't finished like a Case or similar it's about as stout as they get. No blade play and the blades and knife feel like a Vic soldier to me.
