Tom, I was just offered one of these in a trade. Can you tell me about it? Very impressive looking knife. Handles are made of what?
Thanks in advance,
Phil

Phil,
The model #L46-8 Western hunting knife features an 8" carbon steel blade, brass guard and leather handle (split tang design patented by Western in 1931). I found this knife listed in a 1959-60 Western catalog sheet and a 1968 Western catalog.
A model #W46-8 was also offered with a wood handle. This knife was shown in a 1978 Western catalog.

I had been to the factory many times and they made
them right there at the factory, saw it with my own eyes
if fact they had 90 or so 46-8 in the inventory back in the
late 80's and I bought every one of them they had

Yes, Camillus acquired Western in 1991, I believe. Since they own the IP and the rest, they are the custodians of the Western archives, the "go-to people" for questions on them.

Questions such as: Many Western blade patterns are shared with Schrade Cut Co., Imperial, Schrade Walden, and several other companies. The only way to identify some of them as Westerns positively, is from the double pommel pins and uper and lower exposed tang, a result of the 1934 H.C. Platts patent tang. Did Harlow ever license the tang patent to another manufacturer, or was it always closely held by Western?
