in my travels about the internet, sometime ago i came across the following: Fully Functional Masamune i had been aware of the himalayan imports website for quite sometime already though a severe lack of monetary resources had been and is still preventing me from obtaining any of the rather impressive seeming products advertised therein. it was not until recently however that the two things seemed to connect in a way i was cognitively aware of in my mind. when this eventually did happen, however, i naturally got to wondering: what exactly would it take to have the HI kamis produce something of a somewhat similar nature, and would it be either more cost effective or of a significantly higher quality to have them do it than to purchase the one depicted on that website; it has received extremely favorable reviews.

oh and happybirthday, btw

Jman,

First of all, welcome to the Cantina! Take a look around and check out the HI web site. There's enough goodies there to keep any lover of sharp things happy for a long while!

IMO the Kami version of this blade you like would definitely cost more, but at the same time it would be stronger and more unique as well. We're talking a sword over 5' long here.

To me, this would just be a wall hanger, as I can't think of anything I would use something that large for that a good khuk or HI sword could not do as well or better.

Maybe Danny has some better info or feedback on this particular sword model, but I can tell you that the Kami's would charge more (and should) for a sword with a 40" blade!

Regards,

Norm

Bottom line is......no. Sorry to close that avenue.

If you look at the HI website you'll find the variety of
Himalayan katanas under swords.
The least expensive costs almost as much as you want to avoid paying
(for the example shown).
A longer sword would of course cost more,
even the plainest version.

Also, shipping from Nepal is restricted to 36" total length.
Longer length would require -way- too great investment in shipping,
since you're looking for lower prices.

All the HI swords are 'real' swords, & completely & fully functional.
I don't know anything about the one you point out.
As you likely read in the sword forum here,
the HI katanas are not considered 'katanas'
by most people who prize katanas.
If you want traditional,
then HI Himalayan katanas are not it.

Best luck finding the one you want.

You could always buy the HI katana and then have a tang extension welded on. Make a new handle and you're in business.
(I have done that myself and it works fine. )

Hey J man!!

Damn! Good to see you here!!

( he is my friend on about 3 difft forums and a super good fellow!)

well i dont happen to have enough spare cash (nor do i forsee having it in the near future) to really think about getting it eather way. i was more curious than anything else. however, had i the spare cash, i would in no way be opposed to paying more for a higher quality version.

the length problem btw, could probably be circumvented by sending the handle and blade unassembled. i am somewhat confident that i would be able to do that part my self.

Welcome Jman:)
I don't think the question is so much "could" the kamis make this 40" sword as much as "would" they get it right. It might come in at 40" long but have a 1/2" thick blade and weigh 12lbs;) My advice to you, like its worth anything, would be to get your hands on a standard HI kat...even if its just for a few minutes. I'm no sword expert, but my HI kat does not feel remotely like any traditional kat that i've ever picked up. IMHO opinion the HI katana is a brutal stout little war sword that one day had the lofty ambitions of becoming a japanese katana. Then after reconstructive surgery and much bone breaking, the bandages were pulled off and something that kind of resembled a traditional katana was revieled. This is not a bad thing, thought. Its a very functional and unique sword. Its a sword you could trust your life on if people were still trusting their lives with swords;) If i were attacked by a platoon of ninjas with laserbeam eyes, this is the sword i'd want with me while my butt was kicked:) If you ever get the cash, try one. you'll love it.

Jake

My applogies, Danny:) I should have known that REAL ninjas would never have obvious laserbeam eyes. Pirates? perhaps. They're all about lookin tough. But ninjas, totally about stealth and waiting until the last second when BAM... totally burns off your face with their Superman eyes:) But back to the topic...yeah you should try a HI kat, Jman. Perfect for pirate duty.
