I have read some stuff lately that says camel bone is to brittle to use on a working knife. they are saying its OK for a safe queen but that it just wont hold up if the knife will be put to any real work. I really like the look and feel of this material and so I was just wondering what the knife makers here think of camel bone?

Where did you read that ?

I have some dyed and stabilized camel, I like it the way it works for thin folder scales

i Like the way the veins take the colour differently than the full bone.

but stabilized and not stabilized are completely different and i've not tried the UN-stablized.

If you're making something for sale- the high dollar collectors don't like it (the brass has no class crowd)
and the values of any knives you make with them will remain depressed.

i have read this on some other forums I am not making anything but i really like the bone and I use all my knives so no room for safe queens. Just don't want to ruin some good knive using them hard it the handle material is not up to it. here are a couple of quotes from other forums.

"It does have a distinctive appearance.
It looks very much like mammoth ivory.
But a hell of alot cheaper.
I tried to use it once, broke the scales.
I found them to be brittle
I dont know if it was just the set i had
or all are like it."

"I have no problem with cow bone or antler--Great handle materials when installed properly.

I have used Camel Bone and Giraffe Bone.

They Crack and Break if stressed.

I'll continue to use them by Customer Request but these are Drawer Queens.

Sheep horn--Sambar Stag--Moose paddle--Antler Crowns--Stag Bone- Etc--I would use them and use them hard without a Thought."

as I said I just saw these type of statements and was curious if other makers found camel bone to be to brittle to use on working knives.

I hope its ok to quote from other forums I left out the name of the forum and member but if it a problem I will delete the quotes

That's kinda the problem with knife making or anything else in life for that matter. You can ask 12 different opinions and get 12 different answers. Test it yourself and if you are happy with it, use it.

Depends on how it was treated too

If you use chlorine bleach to whiten bones it makes them brittle.
