Camera lenses and knives. Not that different

I have just come to realize that knives just like camera lenses are very similar in the sense that just like a single focal lense is incapable of performing all photographic tasks, so too is it that one knife will not perform all cutting tasks. We're not going to open letters with a Voyager XL fully serrated, but on the other hand if you cut down heavy corrugated cardboard boxes all day long, a Flash 1 would not cut it...pun intended.

That comparison can be made with many other things as well:
-vehicles
-shovels
-paintbrushes
-speakers
-fishing rods

list goes on...

So what's the best hard-use, tactical, baton-ready folding combat camera lens available? Money is no object, but I would like to keep it under $50!

Having been addicted to cameras and the lust for the fastest and most powerful lenses, I agree with Elbowroom. Obsession with the best lenses and the coolest knives are both very egotistical pursuits. I think Ultimate missed the point; while certain paintbrushes are needed for certain applications, must of us have no interest in mundane products beyond the purely practical. I doubt if there's a Paintbrush Forum or Shovels Forum out there.

Both are collectable, yes. And let's be honest: in both cases you only truly, really need a few good ones to get any job done. ;) The sad difference is that good (meaning "professional grade") mass-produced lenses cost as much as some custom knives...

Umm...are you aware that paintbrushes can have a HUGE effect on the final product? Depending on what type of hair (badger, horse, antelope) your brush stroke can be massively different.

Shovels...well...okay

You got me on that one :)

Flat shovel, cement shovel, spade, trenching shovel, long handle, short handle, each one has it's own use. Just because there isn't a forum for shovels doesn't mean there aren't different kinds with different uses.

i think this issue is comparable to just about anything

tables - some are hard wood, varnished and able to seat 50 people, others are glass and meant for 1.

duct tape - could be a polypropylene based thread with a double cross weave and a polyester top with the M3 adhesive or it could be a cheap cotton single thread weave with a polyeurothane top and henkal adhesive.

rope - synthetic vs. natural, thread size, rot resistance, tensile strength, dynamic strength, elasticity, UV resistance etc.

some people want it all, others are fine with just a gerber gater, a box of 3/8in manila rope and some gorilla tape
