I am looking at buying a new digital camera.I will be using it mostly for doing close up work indoors.I hope to spend under $400.
Has any one done any research lately?

I can tell you how to get a excellent deal. What about one week after Christmas and go to Best Buy/Circuit City or whatever large electronic dept. store you have in Alaska and ask to see the demo's or opened returns. I bought a 600.00 camara for 350.00.

Make sure it has a good macro setting. Olympus has
one that is up to 1"marcro setting, but I think its
around $500.00

Before I buy anything expensive, especially electronics, I always check out this web site.
http://www.dealtime.com/
I got my Sony Mavica thru them and saved $290 on it. I love the camera. It uses 3 1/2" floppies to store the pix so there's no wires to mess with or expensive storage chips. It takes excellent pix and has a zoom feature. Mine has 6x zoom, I wish now that I'd paid the little extra and gotten the 10x zoom but I'm still very happy with the camera. Anyway, check out dealtime, it's a good source.

Hi Chuck this is Chuck (is there an echo in here?)-

Here is a link to a site that does Digicam reviews.
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/

I've seriously been looking at the Canon Powershot A40 (MSRP $299.00)
It has a real manaul mode and a very good macro mode. It's only 2Mega Pixels, but according to Terrill Hoffman (a pro at this - he says that is fine for internet photos). Like L6steel says once you decide on what you want check out dealtime.com and you might also check out http://bizrate.com and http://pricegrabber.com

Also check out the camera forums on both http://knifeforums.com and http://ckd forums.com. Lots of good info in both places, in fact Terrill is the moderator on knifeforums.

Pardon the interruption...

Chuck,

Just wondering if your email is still working? Since we cannot be sure, please post your answer to the following question here.

Do you no longer intend to honor the price quote you made me on mammoth ivory?

If your memory is fuzzy, let me know and I'll post our correspondence.

I brought a dx4330 kodak easy share. 3.1 mega pixel it has 10x zoom which is 3x optical and 3.3x advanced digital. the digital is a bit of a con you will loose quality on the digital zoom as it just makes the pixels larger. It is a nice little camera with a macro seting and a video function. it is advertised as 30 secons but it actually goes over a minuet. That is not long but hold your breath and skip for 30 seconds see how long it is. for the same price you can get 4 mega pixel without the video.
I paid $699 aust it came with travel bag rechargeable battery and charger. we only get 56c/us to our dollar so I would think it would be in your price range. You can buy extra memory cards to take with you if on a trip . they are expensive.

It is digital so take in what you want to photograph and try it in the store.
Only thing I did wrong was when I loaded the program it asked if I wanted all images to be kodak I said yes and it somehow changed all my previous images so that instead of opening in photo shop they open in kodak unless I open the photo shop first and open from there. I know I can change the default but have not worked out how just yet.
I have not compared with other systems because a mate had one and I liked it. Others may be better.

bought my camera from Black's Photography...

Kodak DX3500, 2.2Meg pixel(1800 x 1200pixel at best), 8mb internal, compact flash cards. Paid $285 CAN for it.

Bought 4 cards about 2months ago, HP 16Mb Compact Flash(usually sell $50+ each, I bought at a wholesaler for $10 each[no taxes])... 26 on high, 96 on good...

Thanks for all the good info.I do not like all this camera stuff but it is necessary to do busisness these days.
Brett I am sorry that I did not get a hold of you sooner .I just finished cutting that blue tusk up.I have one set left that I will sell you.

This may come a bit late but thought I'd chime in too. I have a Sony Mavica FD75. It has a 10X optical zoom, and that combined with the floppy storage is why I picked it. The downside is the resolution - it's only 600X400. I cannot get good res pics at a distance. It's fantastic for the closeups but I need a second camera for the overall shots. I paid about $400 for it two years ago.

Thanks Dave, I am still looking. It will take me a few weeks to recover from Christmas.I have a smart card reader an I kind of like the smaller cards.

I was playing around with the close up on my camera and it was not asgood as I had expected.
I took a shot of some pins for Dave if you want to see a copy send me an email. some of the other stuff I was playing with was a bit blured.
I don't think it is a true macro setting just a close up.

Just for info. Did not want to give you a bum steer.
