When I was a young teenager in the '70s, I bought a very nice Case camp knife. It was carbon steel and had jigged bone handle scales. I think I still have it --I saw it in my house several years ago-- but have been unable to locate it.:(

I got the urge to replace it and found that similar knives were quite pricey. But I stumbled on this Camillus Model 99 camp knife for twenty bucks:

It was advertised as pre-70s vintage, but I'm kind of doubting that. It appears to be stainless steel and the cheap-looking plastic handle scales are attached with pins that go into the liners; I can see them from inside the knife.

I've read that the stainless models were "99ss", but mine bears just "99" on the blade, opposite the tang stamp.

Can anyone give me some more information on my knife, or point me to a source of info?

Thanks very much for any help,

The number 99 was a good camp knife. The blades are carbon steel and the tools. That knife was made in the 70s. The tools where bigger the stainless had smaller tools. The number 99 covers where held on with pin on pins rived on the inside and spun on the out side. That tells me that was a older knife. It should keep a good edge. I worked on knives at camillus.

Thomas,

Thanks very much for the information; I appreciate it. It's a great knife and I already bought another one like it. You folks did very nice work.

The images of my Camillus 99 in the above post aren't photos. I put the knife on my flatbed scanner to make the images and the scans make the blades look dull gray. Here's a slightly better photo:
