Hey there,

I just got a really nice Camillus 99 camp knife. I was wondering when were these knives produced? Any way to date it?

Thanks!

I do have one, but geez...this forum isn't well suited to firing up a quick pic it seems...

I will describe it as best I can...brown jigged handle (some kind of plastic I'd say), Camillus in block letters on the shield, Camillus (underlined), New York, USA on the tang stamp...

Don't know if that helps or not...

I see the 99SS appearing in the 2003 catalog, but not in the 2004.
I only have listings of it back as far as the mid 1950s.
I don't know when it was introduced, but that looks like close to a 50 year run, probably more.

Post a pic of the knife & some close-ups of the tang stampings & maybe someone can give an approximate date to your knife.

the older #99 back in the 50s and in the 60s where made with high carbon steel blades. The #99ss the ss was for stainless steel.:D

No offense nbender but I have to disagree. I can fire up a pic from camera to forum in less than two minutes. Most people use a photohosting site like Photobucket. How do some other forums provide a quick method? I admit, picture posting tends to stump new members. It is not as bad as it may seem.

Hey there,

Thanks - it is definitely high carbon, so that puts in in the 50s or 60s I guess...that's interesting to know.

Thanks again.

Does yours have delrin or bone stagged handles, nbender? This one is probably from the 1980's or 1990's

You can also date a Camillus knife by the method used to fasten the handles to the linings. Early knives have handles that are "pinned on" or fastened by "prongs". Around 1970, Camillus began using "studs" that are part of the Delrin handles to secure the handles. The "studs" are visible inside the knife.
