I tried out a Heat at the knife store. I like it, and i've heard good things. I'm thinking about getting one, but I notice there doesn't seem to be any kind of safety switch to prevent it from opening. Has anyone had any problems with any camillus a/o knives opening accidently or is it something I shouldn't worry about?

I have been carrying mine for over a year and have never had an accidential opening. I have other folders that I carry but I go a few days or a week and I miss my Heat.

I have the sizzle, blaze and a few of the heats...they are all great and require a substanial amount of push to make them open, so it would be hard for an accidental opening to occur.....

I have a Heat and Blaze and haven't had them open accidently in my pocket. Mine also opened when it fell onto a floor, however. My Kershaw Whirlwind did the same thing, though:)

MelancholyMutt's has opened on me many more times than I would have liked when he dropped it

At this point, I should be very chary of buying any Camillus product as the chances of getting customer service on it are "slim" and "none" with "slim" packing his bags. I should think that this would hold especially true for a more complex device such as an Assisted Opener.

One suggestion, don't get one with a tip-up carry and then carry it in your back pocket...sooner or later your butt will open the sucker and either cut you pocket or your hand when you reach for it.

I carry an Aftermath A/O in my right pocket (tip down).

FWIW

The Heat is a great knife, I wouldn't worry about accidental opening on this one. It requires a pretty firm push to get it started, and it is designed for tip down carry, so you wouldn't stick yourself reaching into your pocket even if it did open. As to any sort of warranty, yes, you can probably forget about that. It does not look like Camillus will be making a come back. Don't let that prevent you from buying it though. It is a very sturdy knife, with a spring mechanism to match. You will get many years of good use out of this knife before it quits on you.

Yeah, Im not worried about a warranty. Maybe i would be if I were buying a $150 knife.

thanks for the info all.

The safety is built into the AO. The way it is designed, it requires the blade to be opened manually past a certain degree angle, don't remember the number. Once past that point, the spring kicks it all of the way open. If it doesn't make that minimal degree, it is designed to actually close the blade. I have tested it with my Camillus Heat and Dominator. I opened it short of the minimal opening point and dropped it on the ground. I controlled all of the drops so the knife wouldn't land in such a way to force the knife shut. Each test, the blade closed. Also, I have never had the blade open unintentionally. However, if the opener isn't tuned properly, the safety might not work.
