Camillus/Becker sheath rattle

No, not a toy for a baby - I know what you all were thinking. ("Hey! A new teething toy for the little fella!")

After seeing 6shooter's thread on fatwood, and seeing the sheath posted there, it brought me back to the only complaint I've ever had about my old Camillus/Becker BK7: The sheath.

The kydex sleeve pulled out a while back, and I ran screws through the bottom. However, my BK7 still rattles around in it, BAD.

Any suggestions? I hate to buy a new sheath, especially since I have four other 'nekkid' fixed blades in need of sheaths. :(

Here's a pic: (custom knotwork at the bottom courtesy of my son, circa 2010.)

You could try pulling out the sleeve and heating it up to mold it over the blade.

Otherwise you could get some thin cardboard(like the back of notebooks have), cut two pieces the length of the insert, and slide the taped end into the bottom leaving the other end open for the knife to slip down into.

If you have a heatgun you can mold the sheath inserts. Put masking tape on at least one side of the blade or I find they will form to snugly. You can also boil water and insert the pastic into that but it isn't as easy as a heat gun.

Another thought is to insert the plastic into a section of inner tube to muffle the rattle.

I fixed my sheath a while ago and posted it here:

Also, in my review of the BK5 I talk about it a bit at 5:51 and show how the insert really works.

I tried removing the insert from a BK10 sheath and reheating it with a heat gun. I found the kydex to be so darn thick that it was really hard to work with. The project was a failure, but perhaps someone with more kydex experience and equipment might be more successful at reshaping it.

Thanks everyone - ironically, the main problem other than the lack of retention & rattle, was that when the one little glue drop that held the sleeve in finally let go, the kydex sleeve would come out with the knife. Later I realized that there was an unfinished burr or lip around the top, and when I took that off with a de-burring tool, the knife fell out.

Years ago (like, my childhood) I made sheaths with duct tape and cut up milk cartons. I'll try the cardboard idea, and maybe try it with that stiff milk carton plastic too.

Thanks for the ideas, guys!

I wish I could get my kydex sleeve to come out of my sheath so I could heat it up. Anybody got any tips on how to get that thing out of the nylon?

I yanked mine out, heated it, molded it, cooled it, and glued it back in. The belt loop tore off about 2 weeks later. One of the worst sheaths I ever had, the green nylon job from Camillus. That's actually why I started making sheaths, truth be told.

I like knives.

I love Beckers.

I just got my BK10 (SWEET!!!!!!!) and when I unsheathed it the insert came with it.

I'm going to have to do something to fix it. Moose, did you use a heatgun?

Boiling water works better for that insert.

Slide a screwdriver down between the nylon and the plastic and wiggle it around to break the glue.

i just put things into the insert that won't fall out. rattle solved.

the ultimate would be a very thin strip of leather, a little over 2x the length of the insert and just wide enough to curl around the inside edges, put glue on the leather on one side, fold in half, and push into the insert with a ruler/paint-stick or other thin, flat item like that, then insert more as shims until the leather is nicely pressed up against the insert. only use a bead of glue, you don't want slop, or glue on the shims.

if you have enough length, there should be a LITTLE outside. fold over, tape, then put the whole affair back in the nylon, hold down with whatever method pleases you. that should make it whisper quiet.

if not leather, use velvet or some artificial material or cloth as desired.

bleah bleah bleah ...
