The Buck guys were not able to positively confirm the blade steel on my 1972 Buck 309, so I thought I'd try here. They thought probably 440A, but possibly 440B or 440C. It's a Camillus contract knife with a "BUCK, MADE IN THE USA" stamp. It also has rare stainless bolsters, not nickel silver.

Thanks!

The Camillus S card for the Buck 301 from 1969 shows 440A being used at that time for the blade steel. I know this doesn't necessarily answer your question, but it's a start.

Thanks Sac. I'll go with 440A unless someone can prove it wrong.

I hope I was one of the 440A guys, cause Phil told me, but I have learned to always say 'might be'.

Let me use this Buck thread to tell anyone who doesn't visit the Buck forum that Chuck Buck has passed away.

If you want additional information please go to the Buck knife forum, where several threads are ongoing.

300,

Yes, you said 440A, but there was some uncertainty in the discussion. It might have been you that suggested asking here. Anyway, now I know for sure. Thanks!

Sorry for off. What is the difference knives stamped "BUCK, MADE IN, USA" and "BUCK, 309, USA"?

You know that guy that wrote that disappeared. In his place is a lazy, good for nothin' that never did finish writing up other stuff to share the info. I am not sure if he is ever going to come back, he has gotten some malady that got his knife get up and go to get up and get. Maybe it was agreeing to be a moderator, that may have done it....300

It's a great resource. I (along with many others, I'm sure) really appreciate the research and writing and picture-taking you did. It has helped immensely. Thank you!

There are two or three little typos I need to correct. So guess I need to get that done. Nothing major. Anyone ever find anything incorrect let me know.....
