the later ('92 on ?) of these are often referred to as "crap", where as the originals (1980 - 91 ?) are noted to be very well made. what makes the newer ones "crap" and is it only the newer ones that are red/yellow ? is it possible to differentiate by tang stamp ? thanks for any help, i've been looking for a couple of weeks and haven't figured this out yet.

The early ones were made in quite small numbers, so hence they increased in value.

Remington ordered too many in the later years so they tend to trade for less than retail now.

The quality was fairly consistant through the years.

Agreed. The ones I have from the 90's and later are very good quality, but even the so called collector series (Camillus Classic Cartridge, Remington Silver Bullet etc.) haven't done much in terms of appreciation.

Very nice knives though. I like them and I'm glad I have them.
