I have what I believe to be an old Camillus camp knife. How can I tell when it was made and what model it is? It says Camillus New York and I think USA on the tang. It has brass liners, a steel laynard ring, 4 "blades" and some type of dark brown or black fake stag scales. Any help would be great! the knife is in decent shape with the eception of some rust/discoloration and one of the scales is comming off. What whould be its value?

I was thinking about pulling off the old scales and putting some of my own on and really cleaning it up. Would this hurt its value?

Your Camillus 4 blade camp knife sounds like a model #99. There should be a number stamped on the blade. The model #99 was first offered after WWII and the early versions have three pins showing on each handle. The handles were probably celluloid, acetate, pyroxylin or a similar material. Later versions produced after the early 1970's have only one pin showing on each handle and the handles were made of Delrin. Some of the early camp knives used a two piece can-opener from 1946 to 1948.
Can you send me a photo or post it on BladeForums? This will assist me in determining the age of your knife. I have several older catalogs showing the model #99 camp knife and if you e-mail me your postal mailing address, I will send you copies.
Unless the handles are damaged or missing, it is recomended that you keep the knife as original as possible.

Thanks Tom from Camco,
I couldn't find any #99 on any of the blades. I wish I could send a pic but I don't have a dig camera. I will be getting one soon and I will send a pic asap.

I'm a little confused by this knife of mine, you said that some of the earlier camp knives had a two piece can opener 1946-1948 and the later ones after 1970 had only one pin in each scale? Mine has a two piece can opener but only has one pin in each of its scales.

I will email you with my address, I would love to see some of the older Camillus Camp knives.

Photo can not be accessed. Can you e-mail it to me? Thank you.
