Just got my Remington "Maverick" 2005 Bullet Shield Knife. It is a modified muskrat with jigged black cherry bone handles. The workmanship is outstanding, the quality is exceptional. Fit and finish are beautiful as the bone handles. The lifetime warranty info lists Camillus as the place to send it for repair or replacement, so I assume it's made by Camillus? If so, why do they not offer such incredibly made bone handled knives under thier own banner? They can obviously still produce some truly wonderful traditional style knives.

I can't speak for Camillus, but unfortunetly, the majority of knives are sold for $20 and under, and most of the profit lies there with some companies.

Camillus can produce some really nice knives, when they want to. They do allot of jobbing though, just like others, schrade (use to), colonial, case, etc. etc. etc. etc.

They've made folders for a.g. russell, sears, western, moore maker also, and others.

In fact they've made allot of remingtons over the years. In fact back when remington was stopping making their own line, camillus was making them then, thats been over 60 years ago!

Unfortunately you have to remember that allot of work goes into a good folder. They can sell more cheap knives, than nice ones. It all comes down to the consumer dictating whats made. Most people would rather have an in-expensive knife then one that costs them a fair amount to money. That's why case has "cheapened" their quality, that's (partly) why schrade went under. Allot of people these days would rather spend $5.00 on a cheap chinese made knife than a good folder. Unfortunately, that's the way it is. There is a market for well made knives, but the market is not big enough to support entire factories. It all depends on what the consumer is buying.

As stated and as you guess, the knife is a Camillus. Camillus and Remington have a long history and both companies are up front about the relationship they have. This isn't the way it is in all cases; depends on the agreement Cam has with the contracting company. There have been knife companies (name on the tang of a knife, anyway) that have never made a knife themselves.

I note Remington marked knives are now at discount stores, but China-made ones, selling for cheap. And I'd say that Cheapens the fine old name as well.

Yes it's too bad that they are all following that trend. This Maverick is said to be last year (2005) Remington Bullet series knife to be US made, starting next year the bullet knife will be imported (China). Case is still making a quality product, as is Queen. It just blows my mind that Camillus has the ability to make just as good quality traditional folders but does not make them. The new Canal Street Cutlery that has come up from the dust of Schrade is making a heck of a nice product too.

The 2006 Bullet knife will be manufactured by Camillus.

Well that is good news indeed! Glad to hear that it's not going to be from overseas. Thanks for the correct info CAMCO. On another note, any new news on the Collector Club, I never renewed my membership as it did not seem to take off. Is it up and running now? Is there a club knife this year?

Dan,
I have made several inquiries as to the current status of the Camillus Collectors Club and I have never received an answer.

Thanks Tom, I really appreciate you trying. I emailed the Customer Service department from their website two weeks ago asking about the status of the club and never received a response either. No word, yet they still openly accept memberships on the Camillus Collector's Club page on their website. I just don't understand.
