tl;dr: Should I consider Camillus knives, since I know they're 1095 steel, 100% US made, and BSA approved, or are they going to be subpar for sure? Hi all! New here, but I've been blacksmithing and bladesmithing quite a while and collecting knives for years. Now, as a soon to be Eagle Scout, I'm looking for things to ask for as a gift. While in the Scout shop today, I noticed a new set of knives. The BSA has been gradually changing their official knives, and now have a line of Camillus ones with exclusive Eagle Scout inlays. However, from what I've heard, Camillus doesn't make quality knives. Knowing that, I asked about them and now know they are 1095 steel and 100% made in the USA. They also appear to be high quality, with a flawless fit and finish. I also have never had an issue with an official BSA knife. Is there a chance I'm be too critical, or should I look elsewhere?

Is Camilus made in the USA? Used to be.

I was speaking with my boss about this yesterday. He asked where Camillus was made. I told him in China since Camillus folded in 2007. He showed me a BSA Eagle Camillus knife available online from BSA for $179. I showed him the same knife, without BSA markings/shield, online for $20. I kid you not.

I'd avoid Camillus. Other, more reputable, makers like Buck offer official Scout models (got my Eagle Scout badge around,1960, if I recall).

Get the Buck, it's more knife for the money when you factor in the forever warranty.
