Does anyone know the type of steel on this one? I Google'd it and found "carbon" and "high carbon stainless" on two different sites. Can anyone offer any help? This is a USA made version. Thanks!

This might be a question for Bernard Levine and friends..

I think the answer is both as I believe they produced these in both SS and Carbon, but I cant be certain.

need picts of the tang and we also have a handy camillus forum too, if its a more recent camillus its probably stainless, good knife either way, you could always slice up some apples and you'll know right away:thumbup:

Is it a decent stainless?

but i'm a fan of camillus, a camillus knife started this whole addiction for me so i'm a little biased:D and it was a stainless blade #26 2 bladed hunter, still have it 23 years later
i'll dig up some links for ya

Okay......here's a little trick to tell the difference from the carbon to the stainless version. The carbon steel version has a brass middle pin and the stainless version has a nickle-silver middle pin.

Camillus did produce the TL-29 in both carbon & stainless steel. As far as quality goes, I have found Camillus stainless to be quite good. They would not have made knives for so many other knife companies if they had lousy steel.

As far as stainless goes, I have seen good & bad stainless in other brands. IMHO, the key to stainless (or any blade steel) is the heat treating. You can have the best steel and mess up the heat treating and just have an expensive piece of metal. In the other hand, even 440 that has been properly heat treated makes a decent cutting tool.

Just my 2¢,
Dale
