my first post in this forum......

being a retired Navy Seabee, I want to get the word out to those knife knuts who might like to directly support the troops overseas.

I recently had the privilege to contribute 2 combat knives "to the cause." I learned of the opportunity in this post by knifemaker Roger Linger:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=326829

One of the knives contributed was a new Kabar, the other was a Camillus "kabar-style." What is neat about the Camillus is that it was made about 1950, give or take. I bought via from the Knife Exchange Forum and the seller told me the when-made detail.

When I read Roger's post on New Year's Day I asked him if I might contribute a production knife and he graciously assented. Here is the e-mail I received last Thursday from the Camillus recipient (name withheld):

"thanks for the knife its lite and unique. Maybe you can tell me just how unique the Camillus is...it's a wonderful knife. Oh by the way I am from 1st Special Forces Group I am a cook. Alpha Company, I also have been on many deployments. With ODA's.. and never received a knife for free or out of the goodness of ones heart. This knife serves a purpose. I wear it alot, when I go out with them on missions or just for that everyday use. This Deployment to Afghanistan, marks the first time an ODA use's a cook in direct support. please keep in touch."

I must admit it wasn't too easy on my part to let go of the Camillus because of it's age and all, but a knife as tough as that deserves to be used, and where/how better than in support of our troops.
So HURRAY for Camillus !!

Also, here is another group dedicated to helping the troops overseas:

check out their "items" list, you'll see Combat Knives listed among dozens of other items.

If you've something in your collection that could be of better use, I'll suggest contacting Roger or Brian Sain at AAS.

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. if you're wondering about the Kabar, it was presented to the roommate of the above soldier. I heard from both of them last Thursday morning.
