Camillus Jet Pilot Survival Knife, 6-inch Blade, Screw-on Pommel

Camillus started producing Pilot Survival knife in 1958.
On other questions, I don `t know the answer, sorry :o.

Thank you, Vitali ... and thanks for all the photos you post of Camillus knives. Your website has also been a great resource for me!

When CAMCO or sac troop see this thread, I'm sure they'll have more info.

I did more searching and found the following info on Frank Trzaska's website in his Knife Knotes 13 archive:

"MIL-K-8662B (AER) dated 6 August 1959 started life as a 6 inch blade with a screw on butt cap. With such there was not a reason to paint the butt. An amendment was made to the specification dated 29 June 1960 (the Specification continued on as 8662B) in which the butt was punched through and the tang would be "upset" to secure the blade and fill the recess in the butt."

So it seems the knives were made with a screw on pommel for about a year. Now, if I could find out how many were made during that period and what that DSN stamp on the pommel is about. The search continues...

First congratulations on the knife and sheath.
The DSN stamped on the pommel I believe is something that happened after the knife left the factory. Maybe the owners attempt to ID the knife. I've also seen a couple of 5" JPSK's with "USCG" branded into the handle leather. So I suppose the "DSN" could be some kind of unit ID also.
Here are some images that Tom sent me awhile back. I’ve published at least some of them in other threads, but I believe these are relevant to your thread.

sac troop, thanks. I've been looking for one for a long time and have missed a few or they were way out of my range. Thanks also for posting those images! Your observation about the DSN makes sense to me. Thanks again.

Still haven't found out how many of the screw-on pommel versions were made, but I found another one. This one is better quality. Shown with a 6-inch PSK with peened pommel (Top) for comparison.

It's also great that you got it with the original sheath, not to mention you can still read the printing on the early stone. Nice example of used but not abused.

Thanks sac troop. You're right about the stone. Even on later models, the stone is sometimes missing/replaced/broken.

I like them both, but of the two, I think the screwed on pommel is the superior design, but I guess it's a personal choice. Nice finds.

Been hanging onto a 6” screw top for a while.
It’s has an interestingly sharp and pronounced edge. I’d be interested in seeing how it was done. Trying to post a photo.
