Anybody have any experience with the brand camillus? Seen a bunch of them at gander mt today and they say vg-10 steel. Thought it was a nice looking knife but it was too much for an impulse buy.

THere are lots of folks here who are a little sore about Camillus because it is now a brand no longer owned by the original company and factory that is responsible for its pedigree.

That is not to say that the knives are no good. VG-10 is decent steel.

Camillus went out of business, someone bought the name. Probably Taylor cutlery or similar. I would avoid them altogether. They also make knock offs of other peoples designs with the Camillus name.

edit: not taylor cutlery.

My experience has been a dull one with them. I was given a Carnivore Z by a friend I visited recently. I'm happy to have it but I personally don't think it was worth the $20-30 he paid. It did serve its purpose well for the 3 days I used it but the handle is showing lots of wear and the blade went from shaving sharp to barely sharp in record time for me. If you can get a good price, some of their products may be worth it, but at Gander Mtn, I doubt you'll get a good price on any knives. They're usually marked up pretty high.

I think the other problem people have besides the stated issues and the made in china politics, would be the gimmicks they pull. They use a lot of gimmicky tactics to get sales like "Titanium Bonded" :barf:

All that said, I can't personally write them off, I'll just hope I run into one of the good ones eventually.

I'd stay away.

Do yourself a favor and go to the Traditional part of the exchange here in the BladeForums and look for Camillus. The slipjoints you'll find there are American made, and are fantastic.

They're not like that anymore.

That's why I love the exchange, I can find the good ones.

Please give it a try.

Acme United. "Acme" means "peak" or "pinnacle", but in this case, the connotation "Acme" has with the old Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoons seems more appropriate.

Thanks for the info. It looked like a nice enough knife but being sold at the big box stores made me wonder.

I was out at the local hardware store tonight and found another camillus. It was a 2 blade muskrat, touting aus-8 steel. At 14.99 I risked the purchase and for a 15 dollar knife it is quite a nice slip-joint. Has no noticeable blade play in any direction and an over all quality build feel. A few passes on some 600 grit w/d sand paper and then on to plain leather had it shaving in no time.
