Today, during a routine trip to Dunham's, I was perusing the knives when red and white packaging caught my eye.

"Camillus" it read.

Knowing now that Camillus has closed its doors, I looked closer to see if Camillus had gone the way of Schrade, a brand in name alone, sold to some knockoff knife manufacturer.

But no. The package proudly proclaimed "Made in the USA".

"A real Camillus" I thought, "Wow".

Despite my current financial limitations, I immediately knew that this knife was something I had to have. I knew that it was one of my last chances to own a knife made by such a legendary producer as Camillus. I've been on the hunt for one of their scout knives for a while now, and the opportunity to own a piece of their work was too much for me. I raced home from Dunhams to get the required amount of cash.

I am holding it in my hand now. It's heavy, built like a tank. It came close to pulling my pants down when I wore it on my belt. The jigged delrin reminds me that it is a work knife, nothing special to the collectors in this world, but something to which a lot of care and thought have been given. Its a real knife in the simplest terms, strong and sharp. In fact, its the sharpest factory edge I've ever seen. Shaving sharp, the hairs on my forearm snap off at the gentlest pressure of the edge against them.

"What a piece of work" I thought.

It really is a shame that Camillus has gone away. I now can understand that, holding their work in my hand.

So here is my "nothing special" Camillus "Gran'pa" lockback. With its stiff lock, jigged delrin, roughly finished stainless steel and all. It will, and was designed and built to, serve me for years.

ACME bought out Camillus and all intellectual property. I don't know what to expect, but some are going to be made overseas.
