first post on this section of bladeforums. been in love with old knives for some time now.
mostly find old fixed blades more to my liking tho i will pick up old folders once in awhile too.
pre civil war really get me drooling...
civil war era also
anyone got any of those for sale or trade?:)


heres a recent find
anyone have any idea where i can find
the original brass or other type blade guard for this thing?

several companies made these & the little slip on guard was sheet steel. many actually survived since they were so sturdy.

I've had it on my EBAY search watch list for a year
No luck yet...............:(
 
reckon it would be possible to make one if i had a good nuf pix. anyone have one of these with the metal guard that would be willing to take some detailed pix? id be much obliged

FWIW, there is a Case version of the WWII folding machete on eBay right now with a number of photos of the blade and guard. Looks like it was just a simple folded piece of metal that was held on by the handle when it was folded over somehow. Not permenantly attached in any way. (don't want to be accused of dealspotting, so just search eBay for "case folding machete" and you should find it) ;)

Atlanta Cutlery also make a reproduction of the original machete. They seem to be selling for $90-100 but I've never held one so I can't comment on the quality.

I always thought it was a cool gadget. I may have to see about picking up one of the AC ones, since originals in good conditions with the guard and sheath seem to be going for x2-3 times as much.

thanks for that lead. seems the guard would be easy enuf to make. i have some brass, copper and other carbon steel sheeting around. will have to give it a try. thanks again.
