Can anyone tell me the model or history of this knife (sorry no pics, got no camera)

Its a 10" overall length, 5" blade, leather stack washer handle, large hexhead pommel/butt rectangular guard with 2 holes on the top, forward facing serrations on the spine, unsharpened swedge, spear point, massive blood groove in blade, and stamped on the hex pommel is: Camillus N.Y 8-1979

any help would be appreciated

Hi bushman,i would say 5" blade it's the U.S pilot survival knife. If you have the original sheath it was light tan but will more likely be a dark brown/black in places. The sheath should have a small pouch with/for a sharpening stone. If you do a general web search for U.S pilot survival knife you should find that's what you have. I'm sure somebody else will come along and give all the details you are asking .Do the above search and it may answer some of your questions.I am no expert but what i have heard about it's design is: the serrations are for sawing through aircraft bodywork /plexiglass so not a wood saw really. The bloodgroove is a design feature to keep the weight down but keep the blade strong/rigid.The pommel for hammering duties, the holes on the guard now as i say i'm not totally sure but i would say to help lashing it to a piece of wood to make a spear. How far back prodution goes not sure but definately used since Vietnam and were popular with S.F. Lrrps,MACV S.O.G.

Hi disco, thanks for the info! i wish i could say it had a sheath, it did'nt come with one...

The serrations themselves are flat, not really serrations for cutting imho..... (ie; they are'nt really tall like a saw serration, they are about 1.5mm tall.

I orignially thought it was the marine bowie, but based on your info and this pic i found on the web, i do believe it IS a US Pilots survival knife

No probs Bushman, have a look at Blackhawk sheaths. They make one for your knife.Available in various colours and has a small gear pouch attached.Ontario still make these knives but i would say the majority of peple would feel that the Camilus is a better product. If you are considering using it as a woods blade then it would do fine especially if teamed up with an axe/large chopper and sak/letherman.

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …
