Camillus Cutlery Co.
February 28, 2007

Camillus Cutlery Co., 131, of Camillus, NY and formally of New York City, NY passed away on Wednesday from a long fight with foreign competition and a short battle with cancer.
Camillus was born in 1876 in New York City and moved to Camillus NY in 1902. In her youth, working side by side with her family, she proceeded to make her customers and her uncle (Sam) proud. In the 1970’s and 80’s her family had grown strong and included the likes of well know names CUDA, CAMCO, OVB, WESTERN, BECKER, SANTA FE STONE WORKS, SMOKEY MOUNTAIN, BUCKMASTER, UNITED STATES GOV, SCHRADE, SEARS, CRAFTSMAN, BUCK, CASE, REMINGTON, KABAR, ZIPPO, BSA, GIRLSCOUTS, AG RUSSELL, UNITED, MOOREMAKER, COLD STEEL, COLT, CLAUSS, STANLEY, SPYDERCO, BROWNING, MARBLES, WARNER, MCGREW, WINCHESTER, KIPPER TOOL, MONROE HARDWARE, SMITH HARDWARE, MARLIN, HARD HAT, WESTERN ELECTRIC, PRIMBLE, HARLEY DAVIDSON, TIMBERLITE, TIGERSHARP, NOVELTY KNIFE CO., AND NORTH AMERICAN HUNTING AND FISHING.
In the 80’s while still strong her family enjoyed activities together such as a bowling league, softball teams, picnics, and holiday get together. Camillus also decided to take on a new family member and adopted SMOKEY MOUNTAIN KNIFE WORKS and all was well.
Some time in the 1990’s Camillus started to get into tussles with some local thugs. By the turn of the century she got into a knock down dragged out fight with a foreign invader and was hurt but not knocked out. A side effect of this battle was a loss of sight and hearing and lost touch with reality. She refused to listen to family and went into a shell hoping every thing would be ok.
On October 3, 2003, CANCER invaded Camillus’s body and soul. Her brain was affected first and she proceeded to loose long time body parts (Chuck W, Don C, Fred H, Marty R, Barb W, Don W) and thirty or so more parts that had to go for radiation treatment. This CANCER preceded to hurt her by taking all her money and told her it was ok to borrow more to stay alive. Day after day went by and the CANCER had convinced the dying brain all was ok. Because she couldn’t see and hear correctly she continued to follow this path to destruction.
Her sister Schrade who died in 2004 from the same CANCER that affected her predeceased Camillus. She was also predeceased by family members Albert B, Nilo M, Dean W, Hank C, Bud H, Charles L, and countless others who are turning over in their graves.
Surviving are her strong family members who went to war for her without any gratitude or compensation from the ones who inherited all riches over the past 131 years.
There will be a service at the unemployment office at a time to be determined next week. In lieu of flowers, please say a prayer for all the survivors.

As author of this obituary I thank all my co- workers past and present, you truly are a family to me. I also apologize for being too nice about the CANCER. They know who they are and I wish I had more time to expand on the problems but I’ve got to look for a JOB. God Bless,
Don

Nice job, DC. After we have climbed the mountain of legal problems in front of us, ie: pay, pensions etc. we can speak more clearly on the CANCER. My thanks, also, to ALL of those that toughed it out with us at Camillus for the past several months to keep it going. It may have gone unappreciated by the owners but not unrecognized by the rest of us - we did a GREAT job under the circumstances. Phil, can you reccomend a good lawyer? DC, did you mail out the plug?

Good luck to all, see you in the unemployment line.

You have touched the heart and gave words to heal. It would be great if all those wounded by this tragedy could read your camillus obit. A thousand thankyous from us. Good luck in all your endeavors.

It would be nice to schedule a memorial service in the near future to help the survivors cope with the demise of this family member.

Smoke sent for a company that was in business for so long creating beautiful functional knives. Hopefully the workers will find suitable work without too much economic turmoil.

Hey Knifeworker,

Can we burn a effigy at the memorial service?

I'll bring the piss & vinegar!

Potentially Biblical Proportions!

I'll be there between 10th - 18th this month, let's see what we can organize.

Hi Sal!

Good question.

Seeing as The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. has a lean on the assets, as well as others with leans, I would speculate a protracted legal catfight followed eventually by an unimpressive auction.

I hope I'm wrong.

I first fell in love with Camillus in 1971 when I was issued a TL-29 in the Marine Corps. We became especially close when we went to Vietnam in 1972. We came home together on the same med-evac flight. I still have her and will never part with her. Since that time I have adopted 40+ of her children. Even though the bulk of my collection is Schrade (her sister), I still have a soft spot in my heart for Camillus, my first true (knife) love.

My condolences to all the people who made such fine knives that they seem to take on a personality of their own. All the best to you.

To KnifeWorks and all the former employees at Camillus- Thank you for all your help. Over the years I needed informaton about a knife about everyone was more than helpful. I have many fond memories of all my friends at Camillus.

I was going to come to the cutlery on Wednesday to personally say goodbye to everyone, but I was told that I was not welcome and I was not to enter the building because I was no longer an employee. I will now say goodbye and I hope to cross pathes with you again. If I can ever help anyone let me know. I owe you one.
