I just got an A.G. Russell's For Men catalog in the mail today. On page 27 there is an ad for a Camillus Fisk Hunter, which is a Jerry Fisk designed hunter with a 4 1/4 inch blade of "premium 0170-6C Carbon Steel". The handle is Bubinga burl and the knife has a stainless single guard.

OK, it is a nice looking knife and probably a great design - BUT, it is still a production knife made of a rather ordinary carbon steel. I'm am guessing there is a whole lot of markup in the $360 price tag.

Is there something about the Camillus OVB line that I am not seeing? It looks to me like they are just ordinary production knives that have been dressed up a bit, and much over-priced.

A.G. Russell caters to the collecter crowd and there is nothing wrong with that. Collecters are willing to speculate that a certain knife will be worth the price many times over in the future. There is nothing wrong with that either. I am just a plain knife user. I had a couple collectabiles but, couldnt stop myself from useing them and now they are worth less. I quit the collecter circuit a long time ago. :(

There are currently 2 new OVB's on ebay at a "buy it now" price of $259 bucks. (Desert Ironwood & Fiddleback Maple)

It's not worth that much to me. But it's only $315 at the AG Russell website, and that's for the first 125 serial numbers. The difference seems to be the handle material; the website knife is fiddleback maple instead of Bubinga, unless I'm looking at a completely different knife. http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_...lus_cutlery_company/camillus_fisk_hunter.html

There's also the Fisk Bowie with Bubinga for $325 and the Fisk Desert Bowie in ironwood for $370.

They are definitely very attractive knives with beautiful materials. Guess I'd pay $150 for any of them.

Here's something related that I find irritating. Knife companies like Camillus occationally make very nice knives for special occations and sell them at super-premiums. But when you buy one of their regular lineup knives, half the time it's a POS. Instead of showing off once in a while what they're truely capable of, how about doing a slightly better job on all of their knives??
