I just discovered a "Patrol Machete Blank" for sale on the big site. It says it is a Camillus but just a blank. From the picture it does not appear to have been beveled or ground at all. No handle - and I assume it has never been heat treated either. Anyone know much about this? I could turn it into a knife but heat treating will be an issue at least until I find out what kind of steel it is.

Thanks

Steve

I have seen them before and I have always been leary... How can one prove that the piece is actually what they say it is? Once you touch the thing with a grinder, sander, heat, or testing, any ability to return it will be void.

For all we know it could be just some cold rolled mild steel from home depot cut to shape...

I know they are tempting, but I would rather buy a fully functioning Brand New BK4 for 1/4 the price and mod that to my hearts content.

If it is a Camillus Becker blank, didn't they use SK5 under a different name? for the price it's at that's a lot of money for a blank you could probably cut out of a known steel and grind yourself. Or ignore me, I'm not a knifemaker at all.

I've been watching that one too - seems too easy to fake and more work than I have time to invest if it is real

You could just send it in to Peters. That's what I did with the last batch I had. They'll be able to figure it out and heat treat it nicely.

That piece has been there for quite a while - I've considered it myself at least 3 or 4 times. Those blanks are out there, and turn up periodically. They aren't making new ones, obviously...so think about what that means that they keep turning up as blanks (as opposed to becoming knives). I think that, as a project, it might be fun...but, realistically, I don't have the time to dedicate to it (especially at that price)

If it is a Camillus Becker blank, didn't they use SK5 under a different name?
Camillus used 0170-06, which was Carbon V under a different name. SK5 is not the same thing; but, when done well, I believe it offers similar performance. (I think I remember seeing that it is comparable to 1080?)
As an example - the original, Taiwan made KaBar ZKs were made of SK5; the US made ZKs are 1095 CroVan...aside from some squawking about the country of origin, I don't remember seeing much negativity about them (read: no steel related complaints)
