a family member bought me a Camillus beast at wal mart not long ago and just recently got around to giving it to me. well tonight I try to play with it and notice excessive blade play and in general something just seems wrong....well I decide to take it apart as I've read about that these blades need some tlc when first acquired. well I get it and the there is a chunk out of the circular bottom part of the blade(tang) I'm not sure what you'd call it. anyways I have no receipts as it was a gift and took it apart to see what was wrong...will Camillus help? What should I do? I only wanted this blade because of not owning a knife in vg 10 and I pointed this out one day to the particular family member...dang. :thumbdn:

I should've never touched this knife and secondly it should've never left the factory. im probably screwed.

It might help if you could post a picture of the parts involved.
Don't despair. We have a lot of expertise around here.
I'm moving this to Maintenance.

also I don't know if it was how this one was put together or by design but there was about 1/8th of an inch of a liner lock to to try and unlock this huge blade...just wasn't working one handed.

does it look like it broke or was it intentional, without a pict its next to impossible to tell, and as far as camillus helping, wouldnt hurt to contact them see what they say.

Some liner locks are stiff to start with. Rub pencil lead on the area where the liner lock contacts the tang to help defeat the stickiness.

it was never used so it couldn't have just broken and I never forced anything...just took screws apart right away because it just seemed off with the blade play.

ok last night I was in a pretty bad mood and realized I didn't explain well. The part of the knife that rotates on the pivot and the actual part that SHOULD engage the liner lock(which by the way barely touches in the first place) has a chip out of it and will not lock into place and in fact will go completely backwards against the lock. Will try and email Camillus today.

I emailed them and am waiting for a response. I tried to ask my relative for the proof of purchase, but they had not saved it and apparently on the Camillus website it says that is needed so I guess I'll have to wait and see. Any recommendations on what to do with that fine piece of vg-10 if they don't replace it?

Recent Camillus are junky Chinese jobs. Don't tell the family member that it is junky, but I'd buy a US made Kershaw to replace it. Just work the liner lock and tighten any screws as well as put a drop of oil in the pivot.

well it was definitely a disappointment. It would've been my first "premium" steel or what have you being vg 10.....such a shame...I wish I could do something with the blade...
