Is there a graphic or a listing somewhere of the tang stamps and dates of use? I just received the Camillus 696 I bought on ebay. It has the tang stamp with "Camillus" underlined. It also has the full serrated blade, which I had not seen before on a 696. It came with box and papers. The box looks old school in comparison wiht other NIB Camillus riggers I own. The papers have no copyright or other date. Now I'm trying to figure out something about the age.

i have Goins Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings 1998, but have seen Camillus tang stamps on ebay knives which the book does not show. e.g. partial underline; and enlarged C and S with connecting line. i too would v. much appreciate an experienced forum member posting info on tang stamps. roland

Camillus used numerous tang stamps through the years. It is very hard to date a Camillus knife because tang stamps were frequently changed and sometimes old blades with early stamps were used.

For example the 2nd Buford Pusser knife that was made for Smoky Mountain Knife Works in 2003 used blades from the 1986 Sears 100th Anniversary knife. The blades have the Camillus tang stamp and also 1986 stamped on the blades. Camillus never threw any parts away. Blades that were sitting around for 20+ years would be used. Knives in production would sometimes have old and new tang stamps.

Using model numbers and old catalogs are a more reliable way to date Camillus knives. Knife construction and materials are also a good indicator of age. Stud construction was introduced in the early 1970's. Can-openers can also be used to date knives.

If Tom Liggett or Phil Gibbs reads this posting I am sure they can offer advice on dating Camillus knives.

Your right Camillus did use some old blades for Smoky Mountain Knife works. And I have seen #41 blades used in a #80 knife. But it was not a #41 they wher old blades that fit a #80 patern. I hope that helps a little

was posted by Codger in 2004. Looks to be from a Camillus catalog. And that looks exactly like my knife-full serrated blade and all. Anyone know when this was printed?
