While following a link in another topic I came across this:
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=163187
It's the Camillus Timberline Pilot Survival Knife with 440C for $30. I've always been interested in the original Timberline knife, but it was out of my price range at the time. So now here's Camillus making a knife with the same design.

I've been unable to locate a review of it on these forums.

First off, how is the quality on the Camillus version? Anywhere near the original?
To anyone who's actually handled one, how are the ergonomics?
Is $30 at least a fair deal? What is the 'normal' retail price of these? I'm having trouble locating one at the usual retailers.

Any assistance or comments are appreciated,
Bob

I don't know. I can't find a link with good info. The Camillus website doesn't mention them anymore.

According to the link you posted above, that one's 6 5/8" overall, with a 3 1/4" cutting edge.... So the handle is just over 3", if that... looks like it has a double choil, so it might work out ok. As far as quality and actual hands-on experience goes, I can't attest.

That being said, IMHO a "survival" knife needs to be a bit bigger... at least a 4 or 5" blade.

That is the wierdest line I've ever seen for that knife-Camillus, Timberline, and Emerson are all mentioned in the copy..For 30 bucks, I fyou don't like it, someone here will buy it.

Probably not too bad @ $30, I'd say.
That's what I'm thinking. A small Buck lockback costs that much. I'll probably order one and let you know how it works out. I'm assuming it's going to be similar in quality and size to the smaller Buck Nighthawks.

Ah man, I went to order that mini-Timberline and started browsing the rest of the current items. I ended up ordering four knives, a wool blanket, wool socks, and a canvas bag.

Somone please take away my credit card...
