Camp 10 is a wood chipper...

I finally was able to get the recently aquired Camp 10 out for a quick test annnnd I was blown away. This thing is eats wood. I had it going side by side with my go to favorite chopper Becker BK9 and I have to say it out performed the 9 in chopping and was pretty much equal in batoning. The only drawback is the same thing that gives it its advantage in chopping, the blade shape. Of course its great for plowing through wood but when it comes to choking up and trying to do any intricate work it becomes awkard. To some this poses no problem because it would be carried in conjunction with one or two other smaller knives to handle the medium to light duty camp work. I only bring it up in case anybody is looking for one do-it-all knfe for their camping adventures, see the name "Camp 10," and think that will fulfill all duties. I would steer somebody away from this blade in that case. However if your in the market for a fantastic chopper, I would highly reccomend picking one up. For around $40 it is an absolute steal, it performs like a blade twice that. I should qualify this review by saying I did convex the edge before I did any testing. The factory edge was better than I expected from an overseas blade but still left a little something to be desired. Anyway, if your on the fence on this blade, take the plunge you won't regret it.

Camp 10 mods: coating stripped on blade, blued blade, added jimping, convexed edge, deleted top hand guard, rounded and softened all edges of handle, color change handle to green, coating stripped on hardware

I signed up to do a pass around on one of these. Seems like a good choice in steel.

Looks interesting. How thick is it at the spine?

I'm not sure on exact measurements but it was slightly less thick than my BK2,and that's a 1/4 inch. This is the second test I've heard of where the Camp 10 outperformed the BK9. I haven't used mine yet but I plan on putting it to work soon.

Nice, this is on my short list. Any action pics?

No action pics this time. I didn't have any plans on even posting about it but it chopped so well I felt compelled. We just got some snow last night where I'm at, hopefully it'll melt in the next couple days and I'll take it on a trip into the woods and get some action shots to post up

Hey that's cool, thanks for the response. I was pretty much sold on this one. I think your post put me over the edge!

Yea man, I have a soft spot in my heart for the BK9, it's my favorite "big" knife so it was hard to admit that an overseas knife could out perform it; but it did and now I'm growing quite fond of it, chinese made or not. I really love knives that perform above their price point. I think it gives them character. Like they're the underdog nobody expected much from but they proved everybody wrong, I think I'll name the Camp10 Rudy. lol:D

It's turned into my favorite chopper also. I use to use a small eswing hatchet for spitting kindling but not anymore. The Camp 10 does it in about a quarter of the time and makes great fuzz sticks to boot. To do that a knife has to be just the right weight to set up a rhythm. To light and it won't penatrate the wood too heavy and it just splits the stick. A perfect knife for what it was made for!

Looks good. I think it'll prove to be a solid performer. 1060 should be pretty tough stuff. I dig the blued blade as well, very different.

I would like to see a video on the mods you did. I liked all and maybe others would too.
