Camp Axe/ Tomahawk W.I.P htread...

Thanks, I don't check the other forums regularly and might have missed it.

Please remove the dog marks from the top and bottom of the haft Ive never understood why you would leave the chuck teeth holes in the end of a nice piece of wood
Expanding on this topic you brought up in the other forum with out taking that thread down a side path. I'm with you on this subject- especially on the better- more expensive pieces of wood. I would expect the manufacturer to at least make the handles long -allowing the finisher to cut off the dog marks. Maybe it's an automation thing- I would also expect a operator to take two seconds and chuck them up with a desired grain orientation. I still believe the American work force has pride in their products- maybe they just need more input from the end users.
On handles were cutting off the marks will leave less handle than I want showing at the top -I have been fire-branding them with a heated rasp. It hides/ incorporates the marks enough for me.
Thanks again

I like the look of the branded ends as you have done.......no harm with it there......

Kentucky, thanks for posting here in ATH. I had seen the beginning of that WIP but hadn't checked back.

That's fine work. Really interesting! And a sweet hawk!

Mind a couple questions???

I've always wondered about hardened polls. Do harden the blade or the poll first? How do you heat and quench the second one without impacting the first one?

The etch part confused me a little bit. Do you really bleach it four an hour, or were you joking around?

THANKS!!

Thanks for posting Kentucky. I have been missing you on this forum. I never seem to have enough time and don't get to the other forums often. I would have missed it totally without this post.

That brand idea is cool, I never thought of that..I like it.. Your right, I know of at least one supplier who has his handles turnbed by the amish on a multi handle spoke lath..I wish they would make them about 22" long, maybe 24" myself..Ive made my own handles from raw boards before but its a long tedious process..

Yes , the poll first..In a coal fire its easy to just heat a small section..After the poll is out and hardened you put on the edge in the fire..In hot coals only most of the time and let it come up to temp slowly and evenly..You can sprinkle a little water on the poll as your doing to this to make sure its kept cool..
The bleach, yes seriously..One hour:D The brush the fire out of it..Makes a nice aged look that will not roub off..
