need a decent medium size camp axe at a good price. light weight is a plus (polymer handle).

I have a Gerber Camp Ax.
Good balance, good sheath, polymer or fiberglass handle.
Fine piece of gear. If it turns out to be a bit of a handfull for you, check out the company's Sport Ax. Tad smaller and lighter.
Paid about $35.00 for mine.
Good luck with your choice.

Our local Home Depot (could be Lowe's, but I think it is Home Depot,) has the Fiskars line of ax's. From hatchet size up to full size. I would class them as "decent" and "resonable priced" event though I have not used one. The do have the polymer handles too.

Probably one of the best, if not THE BEST options is a Gransfors Bruks small forest axe. The handle is wood, but the whole unit is small, relatively light, the wood is of high quality and the grain is running the right way, and best of all the heads are ground for real cutting power. I find that many axes out there are VERY thick. Gransfors are beauties. You can't go wrong with the SFA. By the way, if you tuck the handle buttin yoru armpit, you should just be able to wrap your fingers around the head. Great size for packing around strapped to a pack, big enough to take down trees, small enough to do camp woodwork with. Awesome tool!

I have to agree with Crayola,

Small Forest Axe by Gransfors Bruks...hands down the best camp axe in the world! Garranteed for life.

Yes, it's that good!

Fiskars axes are very good. They've been tested and performed under very harsh conditions. The handle being bent almost half way and returned to true with no damage. I'd never get a wooden handled axe cause I broke too many of them or the head simply got too lose. It is like knives, you've got ones with wooden scales but those things are made as showpieces and not meant for years of dependable service.

I have a GB small forest axe and a small Estwing axe about 2' long. Both are thinly ground and excellent choppers, but the GB feels so much sweeter to swing. I'm no axe pro, and I'm very fond of all things Estwing, but the GB wins hands down.

The GB small forest axe will readily out cut, and out chop the other brands mentioned like Gerber, Fiskars and Estwing. However the woodened handled GB can be easily broken if subjected to impacts off of hardened wood which will induce dents and quickly to cracks. They are not nearly as indestructible as the synthetic or metal framed axes, but are much better cutting tools.

Wetterling is another cheaper alternative, not up to the standard of GB, but still significantly above Estwing, Gerber and company.
