I just found this demo film by cottage maker "Tinney" of Minibull designs. He isn't reviewing one of his products (alcohol stoves, ovens etc.), but a small lightweight skillet from Wal-Mart/K-mart! About six dollars, less than six ounces weight.

I've been leaving my aluminum camping skillets at home because they are too heavy for light-load overnight hiking trips. And I understand that titanium skillets are prone to having "hot spot" problems (besides being expensive). I'm going to get one of these "one egg" skillets and try it out.

That is a great little pan and one I`m adding to my camp kitchen. It should expand my cooking options, especially in winter.

It`s great when you can get perfectly functional kit for very reasonable prices.

Thanks Codger,

You're welcome Brians. I am looking to replace both lost and outdated camp cooking gear with lighter more modern stuff, but don't have much $$ to spend. I don't fry that often while camping, but when I do, I appreciate a good pan. My current pan is a thick aluminum army surplus one. I have no idea of when it was made (can't find a picture online), but it is heavy for it's size (nearly a pound) and the only marking I can find is "U.S." on the bottom. I've had it a long time and it has served me well. I also have a lighter thin aluminum one, but it just scorches food, doesn't distribute heat well.

By the way, one of those videos shows a light commercial camp cookset top fitting the pan really well. I'll dig through my gear box to see if I have a good fitter when I get my "One Egg Wonder" skillet.

I hear ya, Codger.

I'm adding this pan to a kit that includes an Open Country 2qt pot, folding plastic plate, GSI cup, Sea-to-Summit Alphalight aluminum freezer bag spoon, a light my fire spork, and a white box alky stove.

Basically, $40-45 bucks for a kitchen with great cooking versatility that includes plenty of boiled water for hot drinks and freezer bag meals, and now eggs, pancakes, and even some small steaks :D

My MSR Titan kettle was $50 bucks alone. It is light, but there are more reasonable options out there.

What are you using for a stove and what kind of plate do you like?

I bought the Coleman Max Mini because it was relatively light (6 oz.) and readily available... and cheap ($26.00). The stove and cannister aren't the lightest options, I know, but they will have to do for now. Both fit inside my stainless Aussie billycan. It is a great piece of kit, but heavy at 12 ounces with lid. It will be replaced with something lighter some day. For a plate/bowl, I bought the GSI poly bowl (1.6 oz. $1.99) and plate (2.8 oz. $2.99) and cup (1.8 oz $1.99), but found the plate unneeded so leave it at home. For tableware, I bought the GSI three piece Lexan cutlery set (on a ring for $3.30), but only use the spoon. I don't care for sporks myself and the Lexan is as light as titanium.

I saw that skillet in walmart a little while ago.
Considering it was about $4 i'm kinda kicking myself of not getting it just to try.

Walmartstore.com tells me they have them in stock at my local store. Great way to check local store inventory! Now if I can just find them when I get there. They recently "improved" our store and nothing is where it has been for years except groceries and the pharmacy. Maybe I'll dress up funny and get my picture on the innernetz! :D

I'm gonna buy that pan also, but remove the handle and use my pot gripper sio it stores more easily in my kit. I also use my slightly worn-out teflon pans instead of tossing them, also removing the handle.

I bought one from Target. Cute but really pretty useless all things considered.

Yes, to me it's useless due to the small size. It can cook one egg or a really tiny fish. Then again, I tend to not take anything other than a titanium pot when hiking and I find that to be more versatile. For $5-6 try one, maybe it'll work for you.

I carry one of the old tin skillets, very light weight & easy to clean. also easy to find at flea markets & yard sales. I think they are also still made, not sure by who.

I have the one egg wonder. Awesome little skillet! I have not had the opportunity to take it out camping yet, but I am looking forward to it!

LupaWolf, since you have one inhand, does it look about right for single serving cooking?

I have one of these as well and have thought of yanking the handle off and adding it to my outdoor kitchen. I have managed to do two eggs at a time in it.

It would be great if they would make a version of this pan with a folding handle. I wonder which of Jason Klass's lids would fit this?
