Camp/Hunting fixed blade

Since hunting season started I've noticed I don't have a medium sized fixed blade. I have a Kabar big brother and a skinning knife. But I would like a fixed blade for other tasks like fire or food prep and whatever other tasks may arise. I think 4-6" would be a good size.

I've looked at Bark River Knives and Survive knives and they have some nice looking offerings. But I know I'm missing a lot of quality blades. I'd like to keep it around $200-250 and stick with good steels and materials. But I'm open to cheaper knives. Or maybe a custom maker here on the forums?

A good sheath is also important. I love the sheath on my Randall but I don't use/carry that one.

I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

If you're willing to throw in some elbow grease, the Becker BK-15 is an absolute steal right now, imo. They are selling at closeout prices for like $50 at a few places. I stripped the coating on mine and thinned out the edge significantly and it makes for a terrific slicer that I still feel comfortable batoning, etc with. I may upgrade the sheath and scales in the future, but the stock stuff isn't bad at all.

You can check out this thread and a couple others in the Becker forum if interested:

Lots of other great options out there, of course, but this has been my go to lately and they may not be around too much longer.

For food prep and light utility chores I'd save the money and get a stainless Mora Companion.

A Swamp Rat Ratmandu is my choice in a 5 inch fixed blade for all around use, you should be able to get one with your choice of sheath be it leather or kydex from any number of good makers for $250.

$200~$250 - hundreds of good choices

Very popular production model - Bark River Bravo 1, Fox River, or Gunny in A2 steel

Check out the Knifemaker Exchange - lots of good choices there in your price range. It'd be hard to find a bad one.

I'll throw fallkniven into the ring. Quite a few models in the 4" - 6"" range. NL 3, NL 4, PHK, SK 1, SK 6, F1, S1, A1, H1, HK 9, TK1, TK 2, and my favorite the V1 - volcano.

For that money, you should check out some of the custom makers on the forum. There are plenty good makers producing high quality knives to choose from. My personal picks would be the 'Yuma" or longer "Tradewater" models from, TM Hunt Custom knives.

I really like my bark rivers, but I should have a CRK Nyala waiting in the mail box when I get home. I have high hopes for this one!

Bark River Bravo-1. With a 4.25" blade, 9.10" overall, it sounds right up your alley. Wood, Micarta, and G-10 to choose from :

I have the Bark River Bravo-1, and Gunny, both in A2, and the are both great all around choices for a woods and camp knife.

I would say for a do it all knife of that size, I would get a Becker Bk10. Its a seriously awesome and ergonomic knife. In your price range you could get the knife, micarte grips, then a Bk9, and a Bk4... and a bk21 kukri is coming out too! And it would be worth looking at the Bk5 also... or the 15...

Like any JK Handmade O1 steel knife, the Element O1 will stand up to any use or crazy abuse. The EO1 is a no frills all purpose knife made with the craftsmanship that is the trademark of all JK Handmade Knives. It is designed small to carry easily, and like fire and water, this is an Element to carry.

Check out this link to see the JK O1 being tested to the extreme.

YES....a great knife is that important !
and the Element O1 is that great knife that won't break the bank

The Element O1 is ground from a bar of O1 high carbon tool steel, in my shop in Mokena, IL , This steel is found on many of the finest
custom knives and only very rarely on any " factory built knife. I use no water jets, I use no preformed blanks, these knives are made entirely in my
shop from bars of steel sourced from the US .

O1 Steel is tough, sharpens easily and holds an edge better than nearly all production knife steels in this price range.

I heat treat these blades in my own shop to a Rockwell hardness of 58-59, which my many many knife customers over the years tell me is just
right for edge retention and sharpen-ability.
The blade design on either Element 01 knife is a classic drop point 3" long and 1" tall, 1/8" inch thick with a wicked sharp saber grind. . This grind makes for a very strong knife with a rigid spine and is a wonderful all purpose grind that has an easy to maintain edge.

Black micarta handles are standard on the Element O1 and provide a durable and comfortable grip. One solid and one hollow aluminum handle pin locks the micarta handle in place and provides for a lanyard attachment

The Element Series comes standard with a riveted and molded Kydex sheath of my own making.

To keep your cost low, the Element O1 comes in only two sizes:

The easy to carry, never leave home without it, EDC Element O1 (Every Day Carry) with 3" all purpose drop point blade and 3-1/2" handle

or

Hunter Model Element O1 with the longer, hand filling 4" handle and the same great drop point blade design that is
loved by hikers, hunters and anyone who plays and works in the great outdoors.

The Specs:

EO1 EDC - 6 1/2" overall, with a 3" drop point blade, of 1/8" thick O1 steel

EO1 Hunter - 7" overall, with a 3" drop point blade, of 1/8" thick O1 steel

I just picked up a Survive GSO 4.1 in CPM-20CV, by far the best stainless I've ever owned. Love this knife, perfect size and feels great in the hand, highly recommend checking one out.
