I've always used my Gerber Gator for small wood purposes (no chopping) and while taking off bark of a small bracnh the edge area broke off so i was left with about 1" toward the tip and the rest of the serrations. I went out to get me a small ka-bar, since the tang width is the same i reasoned a smaller blade of about 5" would be better than a big 7" blade with the same tang length. Anyways, I haven't used it in the field yet. Anyone use or tested them out in the bush yet? I've already looked at the archive and i haven't really found much about heavy camp usage. Any info is great.

Don,

Sounds like you a got a blade with an improper differential heat treat. Try contacting Gerber for a replacement.

Other knives in the medium price range that might work well, with 4-6" blades are the Becker Campanion (awesome, ans you can do light chopping with it), Cold Steel SRK, or Master Hunter. There are many others but these are a few that came immeditealy to mind (stout but smaller blades for heavy camp use).

For more expensive (but incredibly reliable), look at TOPS knives. I just got word that there are quite a few on the ground in Afghanistan with our troops there. Very cool....

Best,

Brian.

Have you looked at Busse knives?
Buy one of the size you want, and you will never break the thing.
They are serious knives.

Thanks, I was looking into one of the cold steel models or the SOG Seal pup, but i'm leaning more toward the cold steel models

If you are gonna be near salt water often then I would go with sog.

but cold steel is awesome in so many ways.

tough at the tip and the ricasso, sharp and resharpenable.

if you have any doubts get "PROOF" their promo video. you will buy more than one of their knives after that.
