So it's time to add a Becker blade and I think I'm down to the 5 or 15... I want a slicey knife for camp chores / food prep. I really like the 5 but weight and size may be a bit concerning for backpacking. The 15 looks to be just a tad longer than the 16, which I love, so I may be leaning that way. Any feedback from guys that use the 5 or 15 in this capacity would be very welcomed.

The fifteen would be perfect for what you are after. It is longer than the sixteen and seventeen and is fantastic in the kitchen or on the trail. Get it and you won't be disappointed.

I agree with Derek. The 15 sounds like it would do just what you need. I use mine for food prep often.

I agree with johnny,i really like the 5 and was very impressed by how light it actually is.although i'm sure the 15 is as great in the kitchen, the 5 is what actually called my name.

For a while, I've thought that my next Beckers would be the 14 and then either the 16 or 17. However, after spending some time here on the BK&T sub forum in recent weeks, I think I will be getting the 15 before the 16 or 17. I have been very impressed with what I've read here and the additional research I've done other places since hearing about the wonders of the 15.

So, I can't speak from personal experience - but from the research, it will be in my collection sooner than I originally thought!

I have a 15 and a 5. I have used both of them for food prep and both are fantastic. It all comes down to which size you want, but I'd say start with the 15.

Here is a size comparison. They are both awesome knives, just depends on what you are looking for.

My wife and I use them both all year long especially grilling outside. They are a great combo for meat and vegetable prep.

I have both, and the 5 is the one I use most. I prefer the longer blade for food prep and slicing, and it is doesn't really feel that much heavier than the 15. It feels lighter and faster than you'd think if you judged by size.

A 5 is definitely going to be my next knife purchase, I love my 15 and carry it everyday on my pack.. That is a fantastic sheath Jonny, is it a 710?

The 5 was out of my radar until yesterday. Maybe a little big for backpack extra space, but it wont miss any weekend grilling!

That is a NixKustoms sheath. He made it for a personal user for himself and said it wasn't quite up to his standards. I think its great. Locks in tight and had multiple carry options. Looks good too!

I also would choose the BK-15. My food prepping chores do not require a large knife in the field. Not planning on butchering a deer or cow, but I could still handle the deer with the BK-15.

I just ordered a BK5 and have two questions:
1. I need a recommendation on the best way to strip the coating off of the blade.
2. I seem to remember someone offering Osage scales for Beckers, does anyone know of a source for Osage scales for a BK5.
Ethan, you looked good in the video with Jerry Fisks, sorry I missed you at the SHOT Show. John

I don't have a 5 yet, (its down on my list) but I can say that the 15 is a great blade and the trailing point is very useful in and out of the kitchen. Probably the best game skinner I own and fun to modify.

I figured this thread needs more 15 pics.
