So my girlfriend and I have a camping trip planned in a couple weeks and she wants a decent fixed blade. She's pretty small, a lot of the knives I've come across and shown her might be a little hefty for her. I was hoping for some suggestions in the $50-60 price range, a more slender handle, and aesthetics seem to be fairly important (i showed her some mora's, she thought they were "ugly"). Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks

I'd drop Mark Wohlwend or John( JK Knives ) an e-mail and just ask them if they have anything for sale right now in that price range, I'm sure both would have something of interest and your girlfriend couldn't go wrong with knives from either maker.

condor bushcraft or bushlore, cold steel finn bear, kershaw antelope hunter, cold steel roach belly, schrade old timer sharp finger, martinni little classic, buck paklite skinner, eskabar.

what is an example of what she likes

Another good, cheap option is the Gerber Big Rock. You might see if she's interested in that too. Perhaps show her some pics of some of the knives and see what she prefers? I agree with hughewil and think an Eskabar or Izula/Izula 2 would be nice too but it'll be up to what she likes. :)

from some of the knives i've showed her she seems to like more of drop point. something around a 4 inch blade. Mostly it will be used for general woodworking, she's very artistic and has mentioned that she'd like to try her hand at carving. I doubt it will take any really heavy abuse, other than showing her how to baton wood and make a few traps. I'll talk to her tonight and get a few more details as to what she's looking for. since we're leaving at the end of the month i figured it would be quicker and easier to try and find a production but i'd love to show her some customs if you have any already made around her price range.

Check out Ragweed Forge. You'll find a wide selection of blades there that might be appropriate, and in your price range. Some of the puukkos he carries are elegant.

I would say an ESEE3 but thats out of the price range but the ontario RAT3 is around that price and a darn nice knife .I gave my girl my ESEE3 after she used it and liked it so much it was all she would talk about ,also it fits her smallish hands well and has a nice thin edge.

If you have a Gerber dealer with a nice selection, I have seen some new blades from them that have the attributes you are looking for. They remade their Guardian boot knife with a tanto blade that looks like a good work blade. Also search this forum's for sale section. Have her look at anything you think she may want. Remember it is her knife so she needs to like it. We guys can guide the choice but you would be wise to let it be her choice :) 19 years of marriage has taught me that. That said, I would add that you should show her the Izula with scales. It is an awesome little work knife!

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions. I was actually looking at the rat 3 for myself, but she might like one too. I like the esee izula with the micarta scales, not so much with the skeletonized handle. I'll show her a few more knives and see what types she leans towards.

ESEE Izula 2?
+1 for checking out ragweed forge, she might like the wood handled Moras or other low cost blades of the scandi persuasion.

Well after an hour or so of showing her pics of a lot of knives you guys suggested, i think she's settled on the esee izula, mostly after i showed her the micarta handle slabs and various paracord wrapping techniques. thanks again for all the input guys

The Izula is an awsome "Little" knife ! Mark Wohlwend also makes a sweet custom knife & his prices are good ! You should check him out !

Check out the Grohmann outdoor knife lineup at http://www.grohmannknives.com/pages/outdoor.html

My wife has, and likes, the #4 Survival model. I have handled and used both the #1 original and the #3 Army model and like them both too. The Survival lists at just over $100.00 but the other two are under that, in their basic configurations. Good value for the money.
