If my wife asked for a new camp knife should I buy her an Izula-2, Rat-3, or give her my brand new ESEE-4 that she doesn't know I have that's too small for my hands and use that money to buy myself something else? I will admit that last one is wrong, but it feels so right ;) The list was generated from pictures.

I actually use the Rat 3 for work (USCG) going on ten years now. Cut everything from line to boxes to my steak at chow time and anything in between. Great size, light and comfortable. Definitely a winner in my book!

You could give her the esee and we will call it something cool like knife recycling or redistribution of cutlery.:D. I do like my rat3. The sheath it comes with works well for me.

Izula 2 is a nice light choice, decent for neck carry, belt or pocket. ESEE-4 is getting a bit big for pocket...

Here's my thought, let her handle the 4, see if thats a good size, or if you need to go smaller, and then roll the 4 along on the trades and see what comes of it. Depending on what she wants, the 4 might be great, for example my wife's camp knife is a fixed griptillian, not a small knife by a lot of standards, but it makes her more comfortable in dingo country.

I love my ESEE-3, but I have tiny lady-like hands, so it works well for me. from memory, the 3 has a similar length, but narrower handle, so that might be a consideration the the 4 is just too big. (I might be wrong on that though)

Just give her whatever you psychically have to try out... then don't get overly surprised when she decides that a smaller chainsaw would be her preferred choice...

It is amazing how after taking your vows, you have developed the ability to forsee her needs and purchased that ESEE-4. So connected are the two of you that you, your self, were unaware of the driving force behind the purchase. You sir are an amazing man and show great skill in the art of devination of a womens mind. I say go forth and present her with this fine gift.

That is hilarious!

Have you asked WHAT DOES SHE WANTS/NEEDS THE KNIFE FOR? Do you usually carry any other blades or tools to fit specific tasks such as cooking or wood prep? I don't fully understand the term CAMP KNIFE. It may be a big hefty knife suitable for wood prep (think chopping), then, any of the knives won't fit the bill. Or maybe it is all (or most) about food prep, and then again, none of the knives is the best choice (due to the coated blades and not long enough blades, at least for my likings). If we are thinking about general utility do it all knife... then I would say the ESSE4.

Yes, exactly what Biggambi said.... give your lovely bride the ESEE-4.

If she doesn't like it, she will be sure to tell you; you won't know until you gift her the knife.

General utility. These were picked from pictures. I think the "cute" Izula would be more of a novelty that a Mora could accomplish. I'd rather get her the Rat 3 or gift my 4. Another option would be the BK16, but that wasn't on the list. Outside of the 4 I'd have to basically guess what would fit her hands well.

This.

The ESSE 4 has a military/tactical look that I rather stay away from. Also, I am not a fan of coated blades since they tendo to get ruined with the use and look awful. Did you show her some non coated blades? For general utility and camp knife use... Bark River comes to my mind! You have lots of different models and lots of handle options! I have an Aurora and a Canadian Camp. the aurora y somewhat buscraft oriented (pointy, and almost no belly) while the Canadian Camp is a tad too big... But somethink like a Fox River will be aesthetically appealing, ligth and has the right size/shape for what you want it for!

Give her the Esee 4. Let's be honest here; she won't like it. That's okay, because you'll be willing to take it, although you are going to need a set of custom scales for comfort. Then you buy her a custom fixed blade from one of our makers and pick up something for yourself while you're at it. Everyone wins, and all because you're so damned considerate :D
