Really diggin this thing! I can't post pics right now cause I'm on my phone & off network but I'll go through some initial impressions.
It was REALLY well packaged. I've had a knife arrive that had cut through the packaging and I'm not sure how it didn't fall out. No danger of that here... Perhaps overkill (& $17 Priority mail listed on the box!) but better safe than sorry I reckon!
No matter how many times I hold a ruler/tape measure and try to judge what a knife will be like they're ALWAYS different than I thought. With this one the handle is smaller and the blade is larger than I expected. I really like both aspects. I wanted a completely different (& bigger) knife than I've had.
This thing has a stunning, very thin grind. It is spot on exactly what I like. All contours are perfect. I've never understood a chisel grind and never found them to be attractive but I absolutely love the way this looks...both sides. The edge is gorgeously polished and wicked sharp! DFK's logo is my favorite...ever. It's the perfect size... simple, understated but bold & deeply etched. Excellent font.
I absolutely despise a grit blasted blade but I knew that was part of the "deal" here. Surely it would have been much more expensive with something else. Have scotchbrite - will work though! Actually I've already somewhat removed the finish & am liking it better and better. It's already making the logo "pop" a lot more as well!
The handle is perfect. The contouring is really well done. I'm guessing the g10 was also blasted. I like it a lot. It's neither slick nor grippy. It is smooth but tactile. Everything about it is exactly what I wanted it to be. I don't like overly rounded handles or palm swells. There is some epoxy spooging out around one of the tube flares but all else considered the handle is a home run.
The sheath... OK, keep in mind that I'm used to Rick Lowe, G. Feller and a handful of great sheath makers but, IMO, it leaves something to be desired. It's a little loose and a little wonky. It is a top notch piece of leather & the design is excellent. It is worth every penny of $55 and surely some would charge more for identical work.
Overall the whole package is fantastic and I certainly would not expect an opportunity to get this for Daniel's current asking price to last long.
USE!:
Right outta the box I took it over to the wood pile. I chopped. I batoned. It almost effortlessly split kindling on seasoned oak. I did some hard chopping and the edge holding is superb. The blasted finish reeeaally grabbed and lots of minute oak pieces stuck on the blade. I removed it with a stiff nylon brush and toothpaste. I then gave the blade a good buffing with a 3M pad... just enough to knock down the rather aggressive blasted finish.
I used it in the kitchen this evening as well. I did no sharpening or touch ups between this and the wood pile massacre. I sliced tomatoes, onion, an Anaheim pepper, two Jalapeños & it did great especially considering the previous use. This knife will definitely see more kitchen duty!
Well... That's it for now. It's safe to say I'm extremely happy with this purchase. More to come & pics will follow!
