Camp Nessie Goodness - the wait is over

I finally got to bust open the Camp Nessie that I picked up in last a couple weeks back. We decided to celebrate Father's Day this evening since we will be on the road all weekend visiting the other dad's. There were no complains from me, the wait was finally over!

I snapped a few quick pictures outside with my phone, I will definitely have to get the good camera out and get some shots later on when I have more time. Every since my brother bought a Fletcher with emerald green micarta back in March, it made my list of must haves. I really like the looks of this material in person, especially pair up with natural canvas liners. The lime green pin strips really set things off with this one. The beefy A2 steel has great spalting and the tapered tang makes this knife balance well. Holding it, it feels like a perfect combination of bullet proof/tough as nails and finesse all wrapped up in one package.

Initial impressions are incredibly positive, I couldn't be happier with it. The overall size is nice for an all around camp knife, handle ergo's feel like they are going to work really well and I love the handle combo. I can't wait to get some leather for it and put it to use.

Quick specs:
2016 0603 14 – Camp Muk w/ emerald burlap over natural liners & lime pinstripes
Tapered Tang
Convex on spalted 3/16” A2

Those natural pins look great against the emerald green backdrop...

Spalting!

More spalting!

The natural canvas bullseye pulls it all together...

Thanks for looking.

im looking forward to user pics now
Enjoy and glad you like it

Man, that is a nice one! Great pics too! I love the camp nessie. Congrats!

Awesome knife - I love those lime liners with the emerald handles....Happy Fathers Day!

Congratulations Matt! This is the first time I've been on the computer to check out your Camp Nessie. It looks even better than in your texts. :D It looks like you had a wonderful and well deserved evening with your family. The Camp Nessie is a beauty for sure. That has been near the top of my "Fiddleback to-get" list but you might have pushed it to #1.

Beautiful!! I don't even like green scales and think that knife is spectacular. Congratulations on your new knife.

Congrats! My favorite so far out of the ones I've played with! I dig your handle colors too!

DAMN! Loving that. Thanks for taking the pics Westy. Can't wait to see some work you do with it.

Camp knives for me need to be able to handle a few tasks...
1) Food prep
2) Fire fixings
3) Basic wood working (making tent stakes, notches, hot dog cookers for my 3 year old, etc)

I think this Camp Nessie will easily fill those roles plus be able to flex as a capable skinning knife (although larger than I would generally prefer for that type of work) at deer camp if need be.

If you've seen my previous camping post from a month or so back, it's pretty apparent that I like to eat well when camping. So tonight the Camp Nessie will be prepping fixings for carne asada! Pictures to come.

As promised, the Camp Nessie saw it's first action last night. Although not intended to be a kitchen knife (especially this example being made from 3/16" stock, I wanted to see what it could do with food prep. I wanted to do some carne asada for Father's Day but with running around to see both of our dad's, I didn't have time to get the marinades together for dinner Sunday, so we decided to cook it last night. I made a mojo sauce for the flank steak and gave it an overnight soak.

The other goodies...

Started with the red peppers - even with the blades thickness, it made quick work of slicing them up.

Onions - this is where the Camp Nessie showed it's thickness a bit. When halving the onion it was very apparent I wasn't using the best tool for the job but I got through it. Slicing was a different story, it easily sliced the halved chunks despite it's thickness on the spine. I think the taller blade profile worked to my advantage here.

Glamor shot..

Kamado warmed up and ready to cook...

Peppers and onions ready to go on...

Flank steak on!

Coming along nicely...

While I had the camera out, I took a couple pictures of the honeysuckle blooming...

Rested and sliced open for the big reveal - medium rare inside, nice crust on the outside.

This thing is a meat slicing machine...

Knocked the new off the blade, nice patina starting to form.

Stay tuned - Santa Maria tri-tip coming this evening...

Thanks Tekton - raincheck on the trip-tip, I've spent the evening hauling and spreading mulch vs. tending a grill (bummer). Tri-tip will happen this weekend though!
