I'm trying to decide between the three and would appreciate any advice from anyone that has experience with them. It will be used for general camp chores when backpacking and on wilderness camping trips so I'd like to carry no more than I need to. I'm not sure if the RD6 be long enough for chopping and splitting firewood but its hard to say since I have not handled any of them.

Thanks,

I can tell you that my RD-7 has an 8 1/8" blade and my RD-9 has a 10 1/8" blade. That's counting the choil and has a consequnce in terms of chopping power. Apparently, the Ranger RD models are designated in terms of length of cutting edge.

Agreed, there's not use I'd trust one with that I wouldn't the other. Ranger Knives and Swamp Rat are two of the most honest and stand-up outfits that exist in the cutlery world, and their choice in design/materials are all geared towards real world performance and not hype. Pick your favorite and go. :)

So true.

Is the Camp Tramp a Swamp rat knife? If so..........get that....:)
Just think its a little more comfortable than the ranger knives but thats my preference. I can tell by looking at the construction of both. THey will preform similar I think.

BUT- I do like the micarta on the Ranger knives I have seen so now I may be leaning twords a Ranger and a file when toy get it to soften any sharp edges around the riccasso areas.....

On the RD-9 (10" blade/9" cutting edge), I needed to sand the edges of the hook back near the pinkie finger. It was killing me when chopping. After 5 mins., no problem Interestingly, no such problems with the RD-7 (8" blade/7" cutting edge).
