Camp/Trekking Knife : Optimal Grind and Point Type

Gday folks :) Im puzzling over which grind and point type would be best for my shortly to buy new camp/trekking knife. The purpose of this knife is:

* Preparing food
* Building shelter in an emergency
* Self defence from animals in an emergency
* Any other task should I be desperate
* I generally prefer 4-6" steel blades, not stainless

I usually carry my multitool and a camp knife while hiking to keep the weight down.

Im thinking of a full flat grind with a drop point, but the more I read and learn the more I realise it isnt simple.

It would be great if the experienced folk could share their wisdom on this, thanks :)

My vote would be Bark River-either a Bravo-1 or Fox River. These are convex edges, but are easy to touch up in the field with a piece of cardboard prepared with sharpening compound.

You cannot go wrong with any number of Bark Rivers, nor with a traditional Scandinavian-style knife. Scandis rule the roost as far as slicing ability, and are also easy to sharpen. The Barkies are going to be more robust if you anticipate rough use.

I have a Bark River Northstar and a Helle Futura. The Futura is supernaturally sharp and is the superior slicer, but the Northstar would be much more likely to survive abuse.

Thanks, but Im not after a knife product recomendation :)

Im after some insight into:

* Different grinds
* Different points

And what might be considered optimal for my intended use
