campanion carry

This sheath is described as multi carry,

can it be carried hortizontally,
or is there is a replacement that will carry it that way?

for those that care, I was dead set on the Timberline zambezi about two weeks ago, and since then have searched this board up and down and have decided on the Campanion due to the numerous posts found by some simple searches. i think its totally awesome that Mr Becker and the Will add to this forum.

i also looked at the crewman and a howling rat

howling rat is a little too small

and the crewman i still havent ruled out, but i prefer the sheath of the camp better then the crewman.

also where is the best pace to purhase one of these beasts?
i am in northwest Houston and would consider internet purchase for a good price.

JBP7HL,

What follows is just IMHO and YMMV. If you want this knife for pure cutting, the Campanion may not be your best choice out of the Becker stable. For a small'ish knife, the BK-10 Crewman's edge is quite a bit thinner. Hence the BK-10 will make a much more efficient cutter than the thicker edge on the Campanion.

I've attached a picture to this posting showing the stock thickness of some Becker blades. The knives in the pic from the top down are a Campanion, a BK-5 Magnum Camp, and a BK-7 Combat/Utility (same thickness as the BK-10 Crewman). I will do a second posting to attach a pic of the Campanion's edge compared to the BK-5. In that second pic you can see how thick the Campanion edge is. Sorry, the person who originally posted the pics here on BFC didn't show the Campanion edge alongside a BK-10 edge.

OTOH if absolute durability of the edge is your main concern, then the Campanion is the Becker you'll want to have on your belt. Which one to get depends on what proportion of cutting vs edge abuse you anticipate for this knife.

Two places that carry BK&T knives and have IME absolutely stellar customer service are linked below. Both of them work hard to get it right for their customers.

(edited to add) Regarding the sheath differences: Becker knives are cheap enough that you can get a custom made sheath from one of the fine kydex or leather craftsmen who frequent BFC and not break the bank putting the whole rig together. The downside to getting an after-market sheath is that the Becker knives are priced so cheaply that getting one of these premium sheaths can cost as much or more than initially acquiring the knife from a web vendor.

If you want a leather sheath, I refer you to one of the leather sheathmakers. From my study of the differences, leatherwork has a longer steeper learning curve than working kydex and the nuances of working leather involve nearly as much art & tactile magic as science.

Yet another sheath alternative is to get some kydex from one of the knifemaker supply vendors (or a plastics dealer in your area) and make your own sheath. That way you can build in exactly the features you want in the sheath. If you decide to make your own kydex sheath (not really all that hard to do), check out the copious kydex sheathmaking info in the Shop Talk forum here on BFC. There are a fair number of threads covering basic kydex sheathmaking for beginners. Jens Anso has an excellent kydex sheathmaking tutorial as well.

thanks for the info and pics.

that helps alot, but do you know if the stock bk2 sheath will ride hortizontially?

i guess i forgot to post my usage for the knife on this forum, sorry, it will be used mostly around our family cattle ranch for various tasks and will be my primary camping knife. like i said i was in the hunt for a longer knife(zambezi) but soon found out the legal length in Texas is 5.5 inches, and this knife will stay in my truck (in and out of town) so i want to stay legal.

as far as the choice of crewman vs. campanion, for some reason im leaning twards the campanion, i think i will always have a folder in my pocket, so for small stuff or intricate work i will us my benchmade 705, (great little knife). i was thinking most cutting will be with the folder, so the campanion would be the perfect companion (i know, that was weak)

what do yall think of the bm705 combo with the bk2 as a pair that will tackle anything

I can’t speak for the Benchmade knife, but I have a BK-2 and use it as my heavy knife. It works well paired with a small to medium size folder. It fits in the glove box, between the seats, under the seats, even in the tool pocket of a pair of Carhartts (I wouldn’t suggest carrying it like that, but it freed my hands up). I can’t think of too many things that that pairing wouldn’t handle. FWIW, my wife and I moved back to Texas from Idaho. While up there I used the Companion with a baton to split wood and other heavier chores. I don’t know how the clipped tip of the BK-10 would handle work like that. It may do just fine, it may not.

I’ve thought about a horizontal carry and would like to find a way to do it too. I have a mini-Teklock and it doesn't fit the Companion, I think the larger ones just work with larger belts.
Hope this helps,
Biscuits
