one or the other, Im gonna let you decide. Its for a camper, skinner and defensive blade.Iv narrowed it to these so lets keep it simple.

Tough question. They would both work nicely. I would probably opt for the crewman.

Have you condsidered the difference in sheaths?

If you NEED a VERY STOUT knife, get the Campanion (as a sharpened pry-bar)...If you just need a stout knife, get the Crewman.

The Campanion is an extremely thick knife, and is only marginally effective as a cutting tool.

Unless you have extremely prying-intensive uses in mind I'd go with the Crewman.

Come to think of it, even if you do plan on prying lots of things you could probably get a Crewman for cutting and a wrecking bar for prying for less than the cost of the Campanion.

I've owned both. The Campanion is an ill handling, difficult to sharpen inefficient wrecking bar. For the weight of one of those, you could get a longer blade, thereby increasing chopping, hacking, and slicing power, more reach (for reachin' out ta cut dem fish strings and parachute cord, of course) as well as having a longer fulcrum if you REALLY insist on prying with a perfectly innocent blade.

On the other hand the Crewman is very, very tough cuts extemely well, is a quite a bit lighter, and tends to fit mere mortal sized hands better. (As I recall all BK&T handles slabs are the same thickness, but the thickness of the metal used on the model knife can very much come into play determining the overall thickness.)

If I was gonna go out to pick a fight with a bulldozer I'd pick the the Campanion. Considering that is very unlikely to happen, I'd choose the Crewman (which is PLENTY tough, AND cuts well) and pick up an extra wrecking bar at the local hardware store with the difference.

Ethan Becker hisself said the Crewman is the evolutionary upgrade to the Campanion, even though he didn't claim an exponential increase in cutting ability.

thanks guys for the advice, I will be going with the crewman...as a side note thanks glockman for a past reply about spyderco, I now have a military in my pocket..thanks again
